2023 Senior Bowl Watchlist Scouting Notes: QB Tanner Morgan, Minnesota

It’s truly amazing that Tanner Morgan is still playing college football. After a breakout 2019 season that put Morgan on the map, he has since struggled tremendously to put together a complete season. In 2022, we have seen some the composure come back, the ability to operate the offense, and just his confidence to go out there and play football. He’s not anywhere near a perfect prospect, but he looks like a kid who will get drafted late as a developmental guy with experience in a pro stystem.

Tanner Morgan scouting notes

Pros:

  • Can drive the football into the short to intermediate areas of the field off platform.
  • Throws a nice touch ball. Doesn’t do it often but he can.
  • Morgan has a quick release.
  • Flashes good, borderline great, placement at times. Just so all over the map with his game.
  • Good, quick feet. Stays active in the pocket.
  • Offers limited but effective downfield ability. Capable scrambler, but I wouldn’t be designing any quarterback runs for him. Takes a lot of unnecessary contact as a runner.
  • Can improv with his feet.

Cons:

  • Arm strength is absolutely average. Morgan is a quarterback who has to rely on his touch ability and make good decisions.
  • Accuracy is all over the place with Morgan. Ball can be high, low, or right on point. Tends to throw decently well off platform.
  • Struggles to position himself effectively in the pocket to make good throws. Oftentimes has himself in bad spots because he can’t feel pressure naturally.
  • Does not have the maneuverability ability to work through the pocket well. Looks uncomfortable from the pocket. Get’s very flustered and does not maintain mechanics through pressure.
  • Morgan’s consistency is not there. Routinely steps out of throws and makes it off of his back foot, putting the ball into harms way.

Note: Tanner Morgan is somewhat of a personal evaluation to me. Before Ted, his father, died, he reached out to me while I was a young, aspiring analyst to ask my opinion of where I thought Tanner would go. Ted was very invested in his son’s future and was a joy to speak with. He offered me valuable insight as a coach himself on how to better myself as an analyst and gave me a look into the person Tanner is. Rest in peace, Ted.
