2023 Senior Bowl Scouting Notes: DL Brandon Dorlus, Oregon

2023 Senior Bowl Watchlist Scouting Notes: DL Brandon Dorlus, Oregon

While I currently have Brandon Dorlus projected as a 3-4 defensive end, I think he can play across a defensive line, regardless of whether it’s a 3-man or a 4-man front. He reminds me a lot of long-time Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Brandon Graham. He’s an excellent athlete who needs to be better about finishing. His tackling leaves cause for concern. Dorlus can be an effective pass rusher at the next level and has room to grow into a solid NFL player.

Brandon Dorlus scouting notes

Pros:

  • Very good athlete, especially for the position.
  • Strong upper body. He has good power, springs up like he’s supposed to, and gets under the blocker.
  • Has some brute to his game. I have to wonder if it’ll hold up outside of the PAC-12.
  • Strong first step. Hard to keep in check.
  • Good explosion.
  • Uses his hands well. He has a killer swim move he uses very well.
  • Solid hands and stiff arm.
  • Good pass rusher and can generate pressure but doesn’t finish consistently. He Generated 42 quarterback pressures in 2021 but only had three sacks.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t handle contact from the side well at all.
  • Didn’t play a lot of double teams. When he did, he struggled. Has no plan after his first move.
  • I’d like to see him with a plan more often – he can get caught up after his first move fails.
  • Not a good tackler. Missed 28.6% of his tackles over each of the last two years.
