2023 HBCU Legacy Bowl Scouting Notes: OLB Ronnie Thomas, MVSU

Ronnie Thomas is the latest player to accept his invitation to the HBCU Legacy Bowl, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, from February 18th to February 23rd, 2023. His draft stock has risen significantly this season as his impact on the Delta Devils squad has been extraordinary, flashing NFL-level tools as a pass rusher off of the edge. Thomas has spent his entire career overlooked, not ever being ranked or even in a recruiting website database – but when it matters most, he’s being noticed.

Ronnie Thomas scouting notes

Pros:

  • Good athletic ability. Could test in the top 5th percentile among his position group in most athletic drills. Has a solid speed rush with the size to work under tackles.
  • Good body control.
  • Solid first step.
  • Very solid explosion.
  • Has good upper body strength.
  • Explosive in his lower half. Very well put together.
  • Very solid balance working through his reps.
  • Has some very nice solid bend.
  • Solid closing speed.
  • Excellent motor. Doesn’t take any plays off and plays through the whistle. Very passionate player.

Cons:

  • NFL teams will be concerned about his lack of size and whether he can fit into a more than a specialty role.
  • Not really a brute-type player. He can generate power but not consistently going to be able to rely on it.
  • Doesn’t use his hands very well, still has a lot to learn in that regard to his game. Doesn’t appear to have a plan going into a rep, is still somewhat winging it.
  • Doesn’t have a clean wrap up.
  • Usually much to focused as a pass rusher to be much of a help anywhere else.
  • Pursuit angles are typically good, just struggles to work through traffic at times.
  • Instincts are not good. Doesn’t seem to recognize plays too well.
  • Slow to react in zone coverage. Doesn’t pick up on schemes as quickly as he could.
  • He has to be a bit more disciplined, especially around quarterbacks.
