2023 Shrine Bowl Scouting Notes: LB Ben VanSumeren, Michigan State

Ben VanSumeren is a transfer from Michigan. He started his career as a running back before switching to linebacker in 2020. After leaving Michigan following the covid season, VanSumeren ended up in a bigger role at Michigan State where as his role increased, so did his draft stock. VanSumeren is still learning the position which gives him a unique opportunity at the Shrine Bowl to learn more about his position.

Ben VanSumeren scouting notes

Pros:

  • Has decent lateral quickness.
  • Intense tackler. Looking to blow plays up. Wraps up decently well, needs to control the tackle better.
  • Pursuit angles are typically good. Has excellent closing speed.
  • Good blitz timer.
  • Drops into zone coverage well. Reacts well to the ball. Not disciplined enough to stay in his zone, much too easily moved.
  • Decent play recognition. Usually found in the right spot to make a tackle.
  • Very strong motor.

Cons:

  • Intensity makes him look like he’s moving quicker or faster than he is. Looks like he’s just better than average.
  • Average body control. Doesn’t change direction as smoothly as I’d like to see. Hips are very stiff.
  • Lacks some upper body strength.
  • Will miss tackles by over-pursuing.
  • A little too aggressive in man coverage and can surrender way too much space.
