2023 Shrine Bowl Scouting Notes: S Gervarrius Owens, Houston

The road to the NFL has been anything but easy for Gervarrius Owens, who has seen a lot of action over his college career. After originally spending his freshman year at Kansas State, Owens entered Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Originally signed to Minnesota in 2019, the school released him from his letter of intent and he enrolled at Houston. He earned himself a starting role and hasn’t looked back since, now with the chance to compete at the 2023 Shrine Bowl.

Gervarrius Owens scouting notes

Pros:

  • While Houston played Owens in a lot of single high, he looks a step slow to me. Good, not great, athlete. Accelerates well.
  • Shows decent body control.
  • Relatively explosive athlete.
  • Changes direction well. Flashes solid acceleration.
  • Has a decent wrap up technique. Good hit power.
  • Plays deep coverage decently well. Can get his eyes locked to a spot and be moved relatively easily. Does a great job breaking on balls and contesting the catch point from deep coverage.
  • Plays underneath zone well.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t handle contact well to his upper body.
  • Typically takes good pursuit angles. Does have a tendency to over-pursue himself out of the play.
  • Instincts flash but aren’t always great.
  • Has a tendency to get drawn in by run fakes.
  • Has trouble recognizing plays at times and can be caught well out of position against tempo.
