2023 Senior Bowl Scouting Notes: ROVER Jartavius Martin, Illinois

Jartavius Martin has played a lot of football at Illinois over the last five seasons, becoming a starter as soon as he walked on campus. His athleticism allows him to be a versatile secondary piece in the Fighting Illini’s secondary, floating around to a bunch of different positions and assignments throughout the season. Martin is a mismatch weapon who can play all across the field.

Jartavius Martin scouting notes

Pros:

  • Very good athlete. Looks great moving around in the open field.
  • Excellent speed – should be among the fastest in his position group.
  • Has a decent change of direction ability. Good, fluid hips.
  • Tends to slightly over-pursue to the boundary – something that might hurt him in the NFL. Otherwise, solid pursuit ability.
  • Played a lot of deep coverage effectively in 2022 with Illinois. Has the speed to play one high.
  • Average recognition. Picks up on scheme and play calls every once in a while.

Cons:

  • Lacks some upper body strength that would make him an efficient defender.
  • Decent tackler, not a great wrap-up tackler. Can get players to the ground but doesn’t stand out in any real way.
  • Decent space defender. Angles can be bad sometimes, closing ability isn’t great either.
  • I don’t see a ton of instincts from Martin.
  • Tends to be just a tad bit early when attacking the receiver, has to time that up better.
