2023 Senior Bowl Scouting Notes: WR Dontayvion Wicks, Virginia

At Virginia, one of the most consistent on-field producers over the last two seasons was Dontayvion Wicks, who hauled in 87 catches for 1631 yards and 12 touchdowns, despite missing a couple of games in 2022 to an injury. He’s an intense player with explosive athleticism, a very strong run-after-catch prospect, and someone who can stretch the field with his deep ball ability. Wicks has a chance to be a special contributor and could be a very good NFL player.

Dontayvion Wicks scouting notes

Pros:

  • Very good speed. Excellent burst and get away.
  • Solid body control. He can contort and adjust well to position himself to make good catches.
  • Good, explosive athlete.
  • Good, not great, footwork and has the balance to pull off the double move. Crisp timing routes.
  • Shows a nice release.
  • Flashed big catch ability.
  • Flashes the ability to make catches through contact, even as he’s being tackled. Does a great job winning the positioning battle.
  • Strong run after catch ability. Has a good body size to be formidable against the secondary. Typically breaks the first tackle. Very intense player.
  • Good run blocker, gets downhill quickly and has good strength and intensity.

Cons:

  • Ran an average route tree at Virginia. Ran from both the boundary and the slot.
  • Struggles with consistently hauling in catches.
  • Can locate the ball, just not consistently adjusting to reel it in yet.
