2023 Senior Bowl Scouting Notes: SS Daniel Scott, California

California loved to play Daniel Scott as their one-high safety – he has suitable speed and rangy instincts to do it effectively. Scott wasn’t a player discussed much in the media until he was invited to the Senior Bowl. He’s a versatile safety prospect who has been a starter for two full seasons at Cal and has grown tremendously. Scott might raise concerns with his age, which could push him down boards, but he could potentially impact the right team in year one.

Daniel Scott scouting notes

Pros:

  • Excellent speed. Moves very well in the open field.
  • Good lateral quickness.
  • Very solid body control.
  • Seems to change direction pretty well. Smooth athlete.
  • Does a very solid job playing downhill.
  • Plays good zone coverage. Plays well both in deep coverage and underneath.
  • Shows good instincts.
  • Reads and diagnoses plays very quickly. Smart safety prospect.

Cons:

  • Decent tackler. Doesn’t have the cleanest of wrap up forms, but has a good hit and can get downhill when he has to.
  • Has a suitable skill set to play adequate man coverage. Wasn’t asked to do it all that often outside of check down coverage in the Cal scheme.
  • Just completed his sixth season of college football – age might be a concern.
