The Quarterback Spy: Bryce Young, Alabama - NFL Draft Blitz

The Quarterback Spy: Bryce Young, Alabama

Bryce Young offers upside by cleaning up some of his lower body mechanics and finishing out the consistency in his lower half. I think it’s obvious that Young is a superstar budding at the next level – a phenom with incredible tools and skills. He’s a playmaker and flashes the most extraordinary anticipation and ball placement on throws out of any quarterback in this class. His body concerns are very concerning, especially with his lack of size and frame. If Young can hold up and stay healthy, he should be an outstanding quarterback in the NFL.

Bryce Young

QB – Alabama Crimson Tide

HT: 5115
WT: 194
Year: Super Sophomore
High School: Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)
Rating: 5-star (0.9994)

Projected Draft Grade: Immediate Starter

Projection: Top 5

Outside of the body concerns, there isn’t much to be worried about with Young’s game. His footwork could use a little cleaning up, as it’s still a little bit backyard-ish. Regardless, Young is going to be a playmaker in the NFL – as long as he’s on the field.

Hint, the diagrams below are indeed Bryce Young.

Bryce Young – Quarterbacking Ability

Arm Talent

Bryce Young has an excellent arm. Pushes the ball downfield easily with velocity. His effective range is probably 50-55 yards. He can throw off of his back foot, but he is not nearly as effective while doing this.

Throws a beautiful touch ball. Has great velocity adjustments. Throws a very catchable ball.

Very good release. Quick, compact, and smooth. Is very aware of his lack of size and tries to release the ball at a higher point, especially when under pressure, to get the ball over the defenders and it throws his rhythm off.  Can work around defenders and throw from multiple arm slots.

Accuracy/Placement

Ridiculous accuracy. Uncanny accuracy at times. Throws players open with anticipation. Excellent timing thrower.

Excellent placement. Throws receivers open routinely. Even when he’s late with the throw, he makes up for it with his placement.

Pocket Presence

Positions himself well in the pocket. Pocket composure is good, holds himself up well. Takes some massive hits to get the ball off in time.

So good at making defenders miss and manipulating the pocket. So difficult to track down in space. Does an excellent job resetting his feet and making sure he gets a good throw off.

Footwork

Has a tendency of trying to force the football off his back foot. Does show a good base, though, and typically steps through the throw very well.

Very solid foot quickness. Moves very well.

Bryce Young – Athleticism

Mobility

Excellent mobility to get outside of the pocket and oftentimes is looking to throw before he runs. Very elusive and creates a lot of space/time with his movement.

Effective runner downfield, very athletic and slippery, but doesn’t run often. Prefers to work outside of the pocket and find a passing play downfield.

Improvability

Excellent improv quarterback. Gets to his finest work when he has to create working in the scramble drill. Throws uncanny balls and has unbelievable field vision in this area of his game.

Shows the ability to extend plays with relative ease. Seems to prefer going to the scramble drill but can definitely keep things alive with his movement.

Bryce Young – Football Intelligence

Football IQ/Field Vision

Very intelligent quarterback who clearly understands a lot about the game. Knows how to use his eyes to manipulate defenders. Already working through full-field progressions with relative ease.

Reads pre-snap well. Has a command of the line of scrimmage, constantly making protection adjustments.

Who is Bryce Young?

Excellent leader and a person of high character. Bryce Young will have everyone’s attention from the moment he steps into a room. Young is level-headed, mild-tempered, and a leader by example.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban has had nothing but praise for Young his entire career, which says something about his leadership and character.

Overall

Has stayed healthy outside of a shoulder in 2022 that forced him to miss a game. Does offer some more serious concerns going to the next level because of his lack of size and frame.

Offers upside by being able to clean up some of his lower body mechanics and finish out the consistency in his lower half. I think it’s very clear that Bryce Young is a superstar budding at the next level – a phenom with incredible tools and skills.

Some people aren’t going to be able to get past his lack of size and frame, especially after the three concussions that Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa took this year, a quarterback with similar size to Young. That being said, I think that he will be a star when he’s on the field in the NFL and I’m excited for his future in the league.
