2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Jake Haener, Fresno State

A transfer from Washington, Haener sat out the 2019 season due to transfer rules before becoming a 3rd Team All-Mountain West player in 2020. He flashed in 2021, showing gritty ability and playing through some minor injuries and a lot of pain. While there was a lot of debate whether Haener would declare for the draft or stay, he initially entered the transfer portal before electing to stay at Fresno State. His 2022 season was stifled by an ankle injury, but still was productive and showed good things on tape.

Jake Haener

Projected Draft Grade: Developmental QB2

Projection: 6th/PFA

Jake Haener has some upside ability, I suppose. It’s really going to be in his platform a little bit, I don’t think the league is going to let him continue to clog-step in his drop anymore. If he can raise his release point higher, he can make up a little bit more for his lack of size. Outside of that, I think that Haener is pretty much who he is at this point.

Played through some nicks and bruises in 2021. Missed a few games in 2022 with an ankle injury.

Jake Haener’s scouting report

Quarterback Ability (65)

Arm Talent: 20

  • Arm Strength (6/10) – Arm strength is intriguing on tape. Flashes good velocity but I’m not certain how effective he can be throwing deep down field beyond 30 yards. Doesn’t appear to have great arm strength.
  • Touch Ability (3.5/5) – Demonstrates the ability to throw with very nice touch.
  • Release (3.5/5) – Lightning quick release. Has a very fast windup motion that is one, swift movement. Ball comes out with a very clean spiral. Release point is very low, almost at his earhole.

Accuracy/Placement: 25

  • Accuracy (9.5/15) – Accuracy is very, very spotty. Struggles to stay consistent. When he’s on, he’s good. When he’s cold, it’s problematic.
  • Placement/Vision (6.5/10) – When Haener is on, he’s excellent. Placement flashes excellence, throwing it away from defenders and throwing his guys open. However, when he’s off, it’s bad. Struggles to find the consistent point between.

Pocket Presence: 10

  • Pocket Positioning (3/5) – Works well in the pocket, though not really from the initial drop. Takes him a moment to find the sweet spot.
  • Pocket Maneuverability (4/5) – Works very well from the pocket to move to where the space is and make effective throws. Confuses defenders with his sudden movement. Very impressive in this regard.

Footwork: 10

  • Consistency (3/5) – Clog-legs in his drop. Doesn’t cross his feet… Interesting technique. Relatively consistent platform.
  • Quickness (4/5) – Very quick feet. Goes through his drop quickly, sets quickly into his platform.

Athleticism (20)

Mobility: 12

  • Outside of the pocket (5.5/7) – Works very well outside of the pocket and throws a good, tight spiral even from off platform. Good athletic ability.
  • Downfield Ability (4/5) – Very athletic quarterback prospect. Offers a good bit of versatility while running the ball. Only problem is his size and wondering if he can hold up against NFL contact.

Improvability: 8

  • Natural Improvability (3/4) – Shows some good improv ability.
  • Play Extension (2.5/4) – Displays the ability to extend plays and keep them within structure. Size and lack of arm strength limits him from really being as effective.

Intelligence (15)

Football IQ/Field Vision: 10

  • Football Intelligence (2.5/5) – I don’t think he reads coverages as well. Struggles to see the field. Flashes the ability to throw with timing and anticipation well.
  • Ability to read pre-snap (3/5) – Ran some pre-snap reads at Fresno State. Seems to be decently good at it.

Overall: (70) – 5th/7th Round
