2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: NT Jerrod Clark, Coastal Carolina

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: NT Jerrod Clark, Coastal Carolina

A huge, hulking body on the defensive front, Jerrod Clark is a very interesting 1-tech prospect for the NFL. Was recruited as a tight end coming out of high school and was moved after his redshirt season in the Spring of 2019 and has put on over 100 pounds since arriving on campus. His production was limited, but mostly because his role was to space eat in the defense, which he did well.

I think that there’s a little bit of upside to Jerrod Clark’s game. He could lose a few pounds and pick up some maneuverability without losing his zero/one-tech ability – and then his entire athletic profile will improve a little bit. Outside of that, I think that Clark has about plateaued as a player and a prospect.

Missed the 2019 season with an injury. Outside of that year, Clark has stayed healthy and remained available.

Jerrod Clark’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (45)

Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (3/7) – Doesn’t have a lot of speed or athletic ability, mostly because of his size.
  • Lateral Quickness (4/8) – There isn’t a lot of lateral quickness from Clark. Really seems to have trouble carrying the extra weight.

Strength/Power: 20

  • Upper Body Strength (6/7) – Huge upper body, absolutely monstrous. Struggles to take contact from his side.
  • Lower Body Strength (4.5/7) – Lower body is average. Could be a lot stronger, but isn’t quite there yet.
  • Brute Power (4.5/6) – Wins almost exclusively with his brute power.

Explosion/Burst: 10

  • First Step Burst (3/5) – First step isn’t anything special. Has issues staying lower than the offensive linemen, even when they are taller than him.
  • Explosion (2.5/5) – Doesn’t have a lot of explosion.

Lineman Mechanics (20)

Containment: 10

  • Double Team Consistency (3/5) – Can draw double teams but hasn’t really demanded that from his play yet.
  • Double Team Win (3/5) – When he draws double teams, he can contain it but won’t consistently do more.

Hand Technique: 10

  • Hand Usage (3.5/5) – Shows decent hand usage. Doesn’t consistently win reps, but can certainly contain blocks very well.
  • Hand Strength (4/5) – Very strong hands. Has an excellent stiff arm.

Defender Ability (25)

Tackling/Pursuit: 15

  • Tackling (5.5/8) – Strong tackler with a solid wrap up ability. Struggles to make tackles while on blocks, has issues disengaging for the run game.
  • Gap Defending (1.5/3) – More of a plug nose than a gap defender.
  • Pursuit (2/4) – Doesn’t really have the athleticism to pursuit effectively.

Instincts: 5

  • Instincts (3.5/5) – Fairly instinctive run defender. Plugs gaps well. Plays two gap.

Pass Rush Ability: 5

  • Pass Rush Consistency (2/5) – Not a great pass rusher.

Overall: (66.5) – 6th/7th round
