2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: WR AT Perry, Wake Forest

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: WR AT Perry, Wake Forest

AT Perry is an intriguing option for teams looking for a big bodied wide receiver who can stretch the field and offer physicality at every level of the field. Perry is an underrated route runner, someone who can manipulate defenders with his movement ability and shows solid understanding of what’s going on the field.

Perry’s biggest concerns are his hands, which haven’t been remarkably consistent throughout his career. There’s a few things that Perry could do to become a little bit better of a receiver – that’s increase his route tree knowledge, which I have no doubts he can, and to keep working on speeding up his releases and other things to keep the play on schedule. If he gets better as a run blocker too, Perry could be a formidable outside weapon in a couple of years.

Suffered a minor injury in 2020. Outside of that, Perry has stayed very healthy.

AT Perry’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (25)

Speed/Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (5/7) – Good speed, especially for his size. Doesn’t have breakaway speed once he gets to space.
  • Change of Direction (3/4) – Changes direction well. Shows the ability to cut as well as move in short increments without losing momentum and speed.
  • Body Control (3.5/4) – Very solid body control, especially for his size.

Explosiveness/Burst: 10

  • Acceleration (3/5) – Acceleration is still average.
  • Explosiveness (4.5/5) – Very explosive athlete. Shows his hops off routinely. Certainly has the ability to make things happen after the catch.

Receiver Fundamentals (25)

Route Running: 15

  • Footwork (5.5/7) – Good footwork for a big man. Gets through his breaks cleanly and creates separation. Timing routes are excellent.
  • Route Tree (3/5) – Very limited route tree at Wake Forest. Looks like he can be very effective on a lot of different types of routes.
  • Nuances (2/3) – Shows solid nuance through his routes and breaks, understands how to set defensive backs up effectively.

Release/Control: 10

  • Release Ability (3.5/5) – Solid command at his release. Solid lateral ability to work through the defensive back quickly and get off jam press. Might need to speed up his releases a bit to stay in the timing of the play.
  • Sideline Work (3.5/5) – Shows the ability to get two feet inbounds consistently.

Catch Ability (25)

Catch Ability: 15

  • Natural Catch Ability (8/10) – Solid hands. Perry shows an extraordinary catch radius and soft hands to secure balls from any level of the field.
  • Consistency (2.5/5) – Drops some real gimmie catches. Concentration drops are a thing with Perry. He does drop them too often for a lot of people to really like.

Contested Catch Ability: 10

  • Vertical Ability (3.5/5) – Has excellent vertical ability. I think he tends to go to jump too often – will draw a lot of unnecessary contact at the next level doing that.
  • Through Contact (3/5) – Flashes the ability to make catches through contact with no real issue. Shields the catch point well with his frame. Dives and lays out through contact and comes up with balls. Struggles when he cannot shield the catch point or isn’t expecting contact. Don’t see him securing a lot of those catches in those spots.

Schematic Aspects (20)

Deep Threat/Red Zone: 10

  • Deep Threat Rating (3.5/5) – Offers a strong deep threat ability. Stretches the field very well with his underrated speed and large frame.
  • Red Zone Threat Rating (4/5) – Perry is a very strong threat in the red zone because of his frame and explosive ability.

Run Blocking: 10

  • Strength (3/5) – Decent run blocking strength, tends to come in too high and doesn’t use his leverage well.
  • Consistency (2/5) – Not incredibly consistent as a run blocker. Struggles with positioning and maintaining the leverage he needs to.

Overall: (73) – 4th/5th Round
