2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OG Cody Mauch, North Dakota State

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OG Cody Mauch, North Dakota State

One of eight kids, Cody Mauch, is from a big family and has a tough mentality. He started his first two games in the Spring season at right tackle before moving to the left side and never looking back. He was the first official invite to the Senior Bowl in 2023 and the first official prospect to accept. Mauch has 39 career starts, and all of them have been at tackle. While I think Mauch best projects as a guard, I fully expect someone to draft him as a tackle and try him there first before moving him to guard.

Cody Mauch hasn’t ever played guard. He’s mostly been a tackle, which presents some upside within itself. He’s a very athletic player and just looks like he will struggle to handle speed to the outside. His anchor is solid, which would make him a good guard. There might be some learning from his eyes standpoint and a better understanding of his assignments, but he’s pretty much a finalized prospect.

Cody Mauch doesn’t seem to have a real injury history. Has not missed a game since he became the starter during the 2021 Spring Season.

Cody Mauch’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (35)

Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (6.5/7) – Solid speed for the position, will have no issues pulling.
  • Lateral Quickness (5.5/8) – Good lateral quickness but gets too committed to moving one way or another and can lose his leverage.

Strength/Power: 20

  • Upper Body Strength (6/8) – Very stout upper body. Sometimes doesn’t get the downhill pop on a player that you want to see when he’s run blocking.
  • Lower Body Strength (7/8) – Explosive athlete, especially for his size.
  • Brute Power (2.5/4) – Much more of an athlete than a brute. Has tendencies, but isn’t really his style.

Lineman Technique (55)

Anchor/Plant: 15

  • Anchor (6/8) – Seems to have a good anchor. Holds up well and keeps a good platform as he drops. Doesn’t often get called for penalties – only eight as a starter over the last three seasons.
  • Plant Recovery (5.5/7) – Showed some decent recoverability at the Senior Bowl. Didn’t have much of a chance to display it on tape at NDSU.

Hand Usage: 10 –

  • Placement (3/4) – Good hand placement.
  • Hand Strength (2/3) – Shows solid hand and arm strength. Dictates where the defender goes.
  • Technique (1.5/3) – Technique still looks a little raw as I think Mauch tends to attack and try to play the defender too high. Working on keeping low at the point of engagement will be huge.

Pass Block: 15 –

  • Strength (6.5/8) – Strong pass protector. Does well for the most part but played a lot of games where he wasn’t really tested by his opposition.
  • Technique (5/7) – Solid pass defender, does a good job not pursuing the play downfield. Still susceptible to speed on the outside.

Run Block: 15 –

  • Strength (6/8) – Gets downhill well. Works into the second level, not consistent about getting off blocks and continuing to build momentum downfield—a violent attacker.
  • Technique (5/7) – Fairly consistent, though he has some very questionable run reps.

Persona (10)

Football IQ: 5 –

  • Understanding of Assignments (4/5) – College offense ran many pro-style schemes, shouldn’t be much of an issue moving up to the next level. Seems to understand concepts and principles very well, and what his role is within it.

Overall: (81) – 1st/2nd Round Pick
