2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Lindsey Scott Jr, Incarnate Word

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Lindsey Scott Jr, Incarnate Word

Lindsey Scott Jr is an interesting prospect from the FCS ranks who had one of the most unique college careers ever. Scott played at five schools, two in the SEC, but only saw substantial playing time over the last three seasons (not counting JUCO). His size will be a concern, and the injury he sustained in the NFLPA Bowl this year will just heighten that concern.

I don’t think that Lindsey Scott Jr really has any real upside or potential, and it’s because he’s fairly maxed out. His arm strength isn’t going to get better. His platform doesn’t need that much cleaning up. He’s an RPO quarterback and with his size, you’re never going to ask him to settle in the pocket and throw from there with traditional drops. His athletic ability is a huge part of his game.

Lindsey Scott Jr’s scouting report

Quarterback Ability (65)

Arm Talent: 20

  • Arm Strength (6.5/10) – Arm strength may be suspect. Underthrows the deep ball consistently.  Can throw with velocity to the short areas. Effective range is probably 40-45 yards.
  • Touch Ability (3.5/5) – Throws a very catchable ball in general. Solid touch ball.
  • Release (4/5) – Good, quick release. Throws from a high release point which does help make up for the lack of height and size that he has.

Accuracy/Placement: 25

  • Accuracy (9.5/15) – Struggles to throw the deep ball accurately. Throws verity well with timing and can push the ball well to the perimeters with accuracy.
  • Placement/Vision (7.5/10) – Placement is just not great. Tends to throw slants and crossers behind his receivers. Underthrows the deep ball consistently. Can tend to throw balls behind his receivers.

Pocket Presence: 10

  • Pocket Positioning (2.5/5) – Doesn’t really go through drops. Ran a heavy RPO offense and wasn’t asked to do much more than a three step drop.
  • Pocket Maneuverability (2.5/5) – Doesn’t feel the pocket very well. Flashes the ability to stand in there until the very last moment. Has the athleticism to work the pocket, just doesn’t have the natural feel for it.

Footwork: 10

  • Consistency (2.5/5) – Footwork looks pretty consistent for the most part. Very underdeveloped in the sense that he doesn’t do anything more than a three step drop typically. Plant looks good for the most part. Can get a little wide when he tries to speed up his release.
  • Quickness (4/5) – Very solid quick feet. Can set and throw quickly.

Athleticism (20)

Mobility: 12

  • Outside of the pocket (4.5/7) – Lindsay Scott can absolutely work outside of the pocket. Very athletic and mobile. Throws decently well on the run but looks to run most of the time he gets outside of the pocket.
  • Downfield Ability (4.5/5) – Very capable runner moving downfield. Good athleticism, impressive contact balance. Shows the ability to break tackles routinely.

Improvability: 8

  • Natural Improvability (3/4) – Solid improv player. Does a good job using his legs to create opportunities across the field when the play breaks down.
  • Play Extension (2.5/4) – Shows some ability to extend the play and keep it alive within it’s structure. Oftentimes instead tries to create.

Intelligence (15)

Football IQ/Field Vision: 10

  • Football Intelligence (2.5/5) – Shows some football intelligence. Misses on some disguised coverages and didn’t track safeties most of the season.
  • Ability to read pre-snap (3.5/5) – See’s pre-snap coverage pretty well. Ran a heavy timing and quick throw RPO offense that forced him to understand those types of concepts.

Overall: (69.5) – 5th/7th Round
