2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OT Dawand Jones, Ohio State

The part of Dawand Jones that stands out is his massive size, which is ridiculous. And he gets low enough to win leverage battles against defenders, with his brute strength and powerful body, he’s already one of the strongest offensive linemen in the NFL before he’s ever taken a snap. The thing that will hold Jones back from getting drafted faster is the fact that he’s a right tackle, and not a left tackle. It shouldn’t slow down his NFL career.

How much upside is there to Jones’ game? Not much. He has to lose some weight to pick up some more quickness, but his strength is already top notch. His hand technique and placement could get better but overall, I see a prospect who’s pretty much finished. He’s a monster who can get low enough ot maintain leverage.

Missed one game in 2022 with an injury. Missed a game in 2021 with an injury. Sat out the 2023 Senior Bowl after the first day of practice with a concussion.

Dawand Jones scouting report

Athletic Ability (40)

Athleticism: 20 –

  • Speed (6/10) – It’s a miracle that Jones can move as well as he can. Decent speed for his position group, excellent when you consider his size.
  • Lateral Quickness (6.5/10) – Good lateral quickness. Struggled with some better speed rushers.

Strength/Power: 20 –

  • Upper Body Strength (6/7) – Huge upper body frame that really needs to shed some weight.
  • Lower Body Strength (7/7) – Excellent lower body build and frame.
  • Brute Power (6/6) – An absolute brute in every sense and fashion. Ridiculous raw power.

Lineman Technique (45)

Anchor/Plant: 10 –

  • Anchor Strength (4.5/5) – Really solid anchor. Very difficult to overpower. Has an excellent lean to his game.
  • Plant Recovery (3.5/5) – Recoverability typically consists of Jones throwing his opponent to the ground. When he surrenders his leverage, he gets grabby and can take holding calls.

Hand Usage: 15 –

  • Hand Placement (4/7) – Hand placement could be better but looks good at most times. Has such strength that his placement typically doesn’t matter too much.
  • Hand Strength (4.5/5) – Excellent hand strength, there’s no deflecting his hands and preventing him from making a play.
  • Technique (1.5/3) – Shows decent technique with the way he uses his hands, just not nearly polished enough to hold up the proper way.

Pass Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4.5/5) – Holds up well as a pass blocker. Shows a solid anchor.
  • Consistency (3/5) – Uses his length extremely well to leverage as a pass blocker. Can sometimes lean too far into the block and lose his leverage that way. Allowed 5 hurries all of 2022.

Run Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4.5/5) – Vicious run blocker. Does a great job moving downhill.
  • Consistency (4/5) – Vicious run blocker due to his size.

Persona (15)

Football IQ: 10 –

  • College Transition (4/5) – Ran a fairly professional style scheme as an offensive lineman in the Buckeyes offense.
  • Understanding of Assignments (4/5) – Picks up stunts and hands off assignments well. Don’t often find him out of position.

Overall: (84.5) – 1st Round
