2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: EDGE Keion White, Georgia Tech

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: EDGE Keion White, Georgia Tech

A transfer from Old Dominion, Keion White is an intriguing athletic monster who moves much better than a player should be moving at almost 290 pounds. White transitioned from tight end to defensive end before COVID and missed a lot of the 2021 season with an injury. He carries his weight extremely well and can generate solid power with his skillset. With that ability, White can make things happen and contribute immediately in a variety of ways. White looks like he can play both as a 3-tech in a 3-man front and a 5-tech in a 4-man front.

Keion White is still very new to the position, moving from tight end to defensive end in 2019 while at Old Dominion. After his first season in the position, he opted out of 2020 due to COVID, got hurt in 2021, and didn’t really get extended time as a defensive end until the 2022 season, where he broke out. He still has some work to do with his upper body and just get better at playing the position overall.

Suffered an injury early in the 2021 season and missed the rest of the year.

Keion White’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (45)

Speed/Athleticism: 20

  • Speed (5/7) – Good speed. Moves well, has a fluid motion. He’s a big man moving very fast.
  • Lateral Quickness (4/7) – Decent lateral quickness, not great. Can stunt but isn’t particularly effective doing it.
  • Body Control (4.5/6) – Shows a good arsenal of moves that require good athletic ability.

Burst: 10

  • First Step Quickness (4/5) – Flashes an extraordinary first step. Very impressive. Uses his length to spring forward very well.
  • Explosion (4.5/5) – Very explosive. Shows it on tape.

Power/Strength: 15

  • Upper Body Strength (4/6) – Good, not great, upper body strength. Flashes at times but isn’t consistent throughout the game.
  • Lower Body Strength (5/6) – Very well built lower body. Excellent power and strength.
  • Pure Brute Strength (2/3) – Was able to use some pure brute strength at times to dominate a rep. Mostly used it against smaller linemen.

Pass Rushing Mechanics (25)

Bend: 10

  • Balance (3.5/5) – Good balance when he brings his rush around the edge.
  • Bend (3/5) – I don’t see a lot of bend from White, more of a power rusher who will have to use his hands a bit to get into the backfield.

Finesse: 15

  • Hand Usage (4/5) – I really like White’s hand usage and I think he does a good job keeping his leverage throughout a play. Intense at the point of contact.
  • Hand Strength (3.5/5) – Shows decent hand strength, but not as dominant as you would expect in this capacity.
  • Hand Placement (3/5) – Placement isn’t always great as he prefers to go straight to a swipe.

Defender Ability (26)

Tackling/Pursuit: 16

  • Tackling Ability (4.5/6) – Decent wrap up tackler. Sheer size certainly helps him. Wants to wrap up and make solid tackles.
  • Space Defending (4/5) – Plays solid contain.  Good space defender.
  • Pursuit Angles (3.5/5) – Typically doesn’t pursue well between the box. Shows good angles working to the boundary.

Motor/Consistency: 10

  • Motor (4/5) – Excellent motor. Plays through the whistle and pursues plays downfield.
  • Consistent Motor (4.5/5) – Doesn’t take plays off. Very impressive motor.

Overall: (77.5) – 1st/2nd Round
