2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: EDGE Myles Murphy, Clemson

Myles Murphy declared for the 2023 NFL Draft as one of the NFL media’s most lauded prospects.  Murphy has the athletic ability, the speed-to-power transition, and the tools to be a pass-rushing monster in the NFL. His motor looks good (mostly), and Murphy should be able to settle into just about any four-man front and become a monster off the edge. He is an exciting prospect for the NFL, and I like his game.

Myles Murphy presents some upside as a prospect, mostly with his hands. He’s uses them decently well, but he isn’t great yet, appearing as though its not an area of his game he heavily has been coached on yet. He might be able to work on his flexibility, being even more effective working his bend, which flashes strong.

Murphy has stayed relatively healthy his entire career.

Myles Murphy’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (45)

Speed/Athleticism: 20

  • Speed (6/7) – Very solid speed. Has a great speed rush. Very fluid athlete. Should test well on his pro day.
  • Lateral Quickness (5.5/7) – Very solid lateral quickness.
  • Body Control (5/6) – Great body control. Shows solid stop and go ability. Good variety of moves to make it difficult to predict his next move.

Burst: 10

  • First Step Quickness (4.5/5) – Very solid first step. Times his first step very well and consistently does well.
  • Explosion (4.5/5) – Explosive athlete.

Power/Strength: 15

  • Upper Body Strength (4.5/6) – Very good upper body strength. Shows solid strength to shred through blockers and free up opportunities.
  • Lower Body Strength (5/6) – Solid leg drive and lower body strength. Shows solid speed to power ability.
  • Pure Brute Strength (1.5/3) – Not so much of a brute, but has some powerful ability.

Pass Rushing Mechanics (25)

Bend: 10

  • Balance (3.5/5) – Decent balance. Shows some solid ability when chasing after the quarterback.
  • Bend (3/5) – Shows decent bend off of the edge. Doesn’t really show the ability to dip under blocks and create these playmaking opportunities.

Finesse: 15

  • Hand Usage (3/5) – Tends to use his hands well but can get caught up in situations where he doesn’t use them well and I’d like to see that become more consistent.
  • Hand Strength (4/5) – Very solid hand strength. Can rip very well, works off of very talented linemen very well. Struggles to break some through some reps that you’d like to see him dominate.
  • Hand Placement (3/5) – Hand placement still needs some work. Can struggle to place correctly and ends up with a lot of wasted motion.

Defender Ability (26)

Tackling/Pursuit: 16

  • Tackling Ability (4.5/6) – Good tackler, tends to wrap up well. Very tough, physical tackler.
  • Space Defending (3/5) – Needs to set the edge better. Can set too aggressively and lose his contain.
  • Pursuit Angles (4.5/5) – Relentless pursuit. Works himself back into plays as they are extended.

Motor/Consistency: 10

  • Motor (4/5)  – Solid motor. Doesn’t stop until the play is dead.
  • Consistent Motor (4/5) – Play to play consistency is lacking at times. Tends to try and conserve energy on some plays.

Overall: (86) – 1st Round
