2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: RB Bijan Robinson, Texas

Bijan Robinson enters the 2022 season with huge expectations. His great uncle, Paul Robinson, was a star running back for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Houston Oilers in the late 1960’s through the early 1970’s. His father was a track and field star at Northern Arizona. Robinson is the best running back in the class, hands down, and has a ridiculous skillset that will make him a very popular fantasy player in the NFL.

I don’t see a lot of upside from Robinson, I think he’s a fairly finished prospect. Maybe he can improve a little bit as a pass protector, learning some technique, and that might bolster him a little bit, but we know who Robinson is and he’s just about peaked.

Suffered an elbow injury in 2021 that forced him to miss a couple of games. Outside of that, Robinson has been remarkably tough and available.

Bijan Robinson’s scouting report

Speed/Athleticism: 15 –

  • Speed (6/7) – Very natural athlete, moves extremely well and is very smooth. Speed is very good and he has the ability to outrun secondaries.
  • Change of Direction (4/4) – Ridiculously shifty. Very smooth athlete.
  • Body Control (4/4) – Has a wide variety of moves that he uses extremely well to either bully past defenders or make them miss. Solid body control.

Power/Strength: 10 –

  • Run Power (4.5/5) – Runs with a low center of gravity and generates a lot of power.
  • Brute Strength (3.5/5) – Not particularly a brute runner but isn’t afraid to run over secondary defenders.

Burst/Explosion: 12 –

  • Acceleration (5/6) – Accelerates well.
  • Explosiveness (5.5/6) – Very explosive. Comes off of the cut with insane burst.

Running Back Traits (25)

Field Vision: 15 –

  • Reading Blocks (8/10) – Has decent patience. Does want to plant his foot in the ground and go. Tends to dance and can be too patient at times.
  • Understanding Defenders (4.5/5) – Has a very solid understanding of manipulating defenders with his movement.

Contact Balance: 10 –

  • In Power (3.5/5) – Good runner between the tackles but doesn’t create too many opportunities there without space. Consistently finds a way to fall forward.
  • In Space (5/5) – Almost unstoppable in the open field.

Passing Game Ability (33)

Catch Ability: 15 –

  • Natural Hands (8/10) – Solid receiver both out of the backfield and as a receiver. Natural receiver – has good hands.
  • Catch Through Contact (3/5) – Didn’t see any opportunities for him to make catches through contact.

Route Running: 5 –

  • Route Running (4/5) – Good route runner. Was seldom used out wide as a receiver from both the boundary and the slot – and was an active part of the read progression.

Pass Block Ability: 13 –

  • Power (3/5) – Doesn’t offer much power but he’s intense. Lacks a lot of technique.
  • Quickness/Bend (2.5/5) – Not great working off of the play action to position himself to be effective in pass blocking. Doesn’t accurately read blitz pickups.
  • As a Chip Blocker (1.5/3) – Not a great chip blocker.

Overall: (84) – Top 15
