2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OT Broderick Jones, Georgia

Broderick Jones snuck up on a lot of NFL Draft analysts throughout the 2022 season, myself included. He is a powerful left tackle prospect at the next level, a guy who looks a lot like a player who can be the anchor of an offensive line as a perennial all-pro player for the next decade. Jones is young, too, and might be able to play effectively 13-15 years. A franchise caliber tackle doesn’t come around all that often, and Jones fits that role very well.

I think Jones is about a finished product. We know what he can do, we know what he’s capable of, and it’s greatness. Chances are, we’re going to learn more about his anchor plant and set in the NFL, when he’s not running RPO-type principles as often as he did at Georgia. But, he will be an athletic tackle who can pull and be a lead run blocker at the next level.

Suffered an injury in late Spring, 2020, that forced him to miss some time. Other than that, he’s been very healthy.

Broderick Jones’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (40)

Athleticism: 20 –

  • Speed (8.5/10) – Good speed. Very effective in space as a blocker. Excellent quickness. Very effective puller. Very rarely couldn’t get to his assignment on time.
  • Lateral Quickness (9/10) – Shows solid lateral quickness. Moves very well and handled a lot of speed rushers with relative ease. Doesn’t really overset.

Strength/Power: 20 –

  • Upper Body Strength (6.5/7) – Solid upper body strength. Can even take high hands and not lose his leverage. Arms are very strong, wicked stiff arm. Uses his length very well.
  • Lower Body Strength (6/7) – Excellent lower body drive.
  • Brute Power (4.5/6) – Certainly is an above average brute. Gets downhill with a lot of power and wants to maul defenders.

Lineman Technique (45)

Anchor/Plant: 10 –

  • Anchor Strength (4/5) – Very strong anchor but wasn’t asked to set back into it very often. Much of the Georgia offense was built on RPO-type elements which forced him into run block looks a lot.
  • Plant Recovery (4.5/5) – Shows solid recovery when he takes an initial move that overpowers him. Very quick to recover.

Hand Usage: 15 –

  • Hand Placement (6/7) – Hand placement coming off of the snap is very good. Does a great job maintaining his leverage.
  • Hand Strength (4.5/5) – Very strong hands. Isn’t easily overwhelmed with power. Typically is the stronger player.
  • Technique (2/3) – Technique is interesting. Does a good job using his length to create leverage and has an arsenal of defenses to maintain it.

Pass Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4.5/5) – Very strong pass blocker. Doesn’t have a lot of weaknesses and does a great job staying in control.
  • Consistency (4/5) – Did not allow a sack in 2022. Very consistent pass blocker, didn’t allow a lot of pressures either.

Run Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4.5/5) – Very powerful run blocker. Gets downhill and mauls people. Very effective in space, has the athleticism to follow the play downfield.
  • Consistency (4.5/5) – Very consistent run blocker. Rarely is found out of position.

Persona (15)

Football IQ: 10 –

  • College Transition (4/5) – Georgia ran a very pro-style offense with a healthy mix between gap and zone-blocking schemes. Also ran a lot of RPO-type schemes, which may hinder his pass protection understanding a bit.
  • Understanding of Assignments (4/5) – He understands his assignment very well. Hands off stunts very well. Stays active when he doesn’t have any competition.

Overall: (91.5) – Top 5
