2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OG Peter Skoronski, Northwestern

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OG Peter Skoronski, Northwestern

Many people have Peter Skoronski projected as a top offensive tackle in the class, as he held up as Northwestern’s left tackle over the last few years. However, I don’t think that he has the lateral quickness to hold up on the edge against quicker defenders and speed rushers. Skoronski’s weaknesses pit him to play at a very high level at offensive guard. I think teams may try to play him at tackle for a year or two before sliding him inside.

Peter Skoronski

OG – Northwestern Wildcats

HT: 6036
WT: 313
WING: N/A
ARM: 3228
HAND: 1000
DOB: 7/31/2001
Year: Super Sophomore
High School: Maine South (Park Ridge, IL)
HS Rating: 4 star (0.9502)

Projected Draft Grade: Borderline Immediate Starter

Projection: 1st/2nd Round

I think that Peter Skoronski is about a finished product. I don’t see a lot of upside to his game, as he’s pretty much capped out with his strength and finesse, but won’t really be able to improve his athleticism. We know what he is at the next level, and he looks like he could be a several time pro-bowl guard.

Never missed a game while at Northwestern. Very consistent player.

Peter Skoronski’s scouting notes

Athletic Ability (35)

Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (4/7) – Does not show a lot of athletic ability. Isn’t very quick or fast. Tested subpar at the NFL Combine.
  • Lateral Quickness (6/8) – A tad bit slow laterally. Susceptible to outside speed rushes. Susceptible to any move at the top of his drop.

Strength/Power: 20

  • Upper Body Strength (6/8) – Very strong upper body. Very good strength. Shows a solid stiff arm.
  • Lower Body Strength (6.5/8) – Stout lower body that allows him to anchor very effectively and launch forward as a run blocker.
  • Brute Power (1.5/4) – Not a brute. Really more of a finesse and technique tackle.

Lineman Technique (55)

Anchor/Plant: 15

  • Anchor (6.5/8) – Very stout anchor. Doesn’t surrender much space or ground. Shows some bend ability.
  • Plant Recovery (4/7) – Doesn’t recover very well. Susceptible to inside counters and general quickness around him.

Hand Usage: 10 –

  • Placement (3/4) – Strong hand placement. Does a great job holding in the block and keeping his hands on the interior of the defender. Tends to stay too narrow for too long.
  • Hand Strength (2/3) – Has some very solid hand strength. Handles power relatively well.
  • Technique (2.5/3) – Great technique to handle defenders. Very technical blocker with an arsenal of techniques to handle different types of defenders.

Pass Block: 15 –

Strength (6/8) – Very strong pass blocker. Allowed just five sacks his entire career.

  • Technique (5/7) – Technique during the drop is good, it’s when he gets to his anchor that things are susceptible. Struggles with change of direction, especially with quicker defenders.

Run Block: 15 –

  • Strength (7/8) – Strong impact run blocker. Typically the main blocker that Northwestern runs their power, short yardage plays behind.
  • Technique (5.5/7) – Very solid lean when he gets into his run block. Wants to work into the second level.

Persona (10)

Football IQ: 5 –

  • Understanding of Assignments (4/5) – Quick reaction to instances. Hands-off stunts relatively well.

Overall: (78.5) – 2nd/3rd Round
