2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: WR Kayshon Boutte, LSU

Kayshon Boutte was utilized in a variety of different ways at LSU but doesn’t appear to have the skill set to carry it over to the next level. There are certain traits that Boutte has that stand out and look great. Others will hold him back from being great. One of the biggest concerns that I have with him, is that I don’t think his hands are consistent enough to be a very effective receiver. While he’s flashed extraordinary abilities with the ball in his hand, they are sporadic and very few and far between. That concerns me greatly as a pro prospect.

Projection: 3rd/4th Round

I just don’t see the upside that Kayshon Boutte presents. There’s not a lot of ability there athletically, and that’s not getting any better. He’s already a decent route runner – the things that bring him down are based on his lack of athleticism. He could improve his run blocking maybe, but I don’t see that happening. There’s just not a lot of upside with his game.

Missed several games in 2021 with an injury. Missed a couple of games in 2022 with an injury.

Kayshon Boutte’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (25)

Speed/Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (5.5/7) – Good, not great speed. Doesn’t show “burner” type tendencies on tape.
  • Change of Direction (3/4) – Changes direction in small increments well. Decently quick through breaks as well.
  • Body Control (3.5/4) – Solid body control. Twists and turns well.

Acceleration/Burst: 10

  • Acceleration (2.5/5) – Acceleration is not great. Struggles to get up to speed.
  • Explosiveness (3/5) – Fairly explosive. Tested terribly at the Combine.

Receiver Technique (25)

Route Running: 15

  • Footwork (5.5/7) – Good footwork through his routes. Does a great job at the top of his route. Solid in timing routes.
  • Route Tree (4/5) – Ran a good route tree from all across the formation. Used in a variety of ways.
  • Nuances (2/3) – Fairly nuanced as a route runner.

Release/Flexibility: 10

  • Release Ability (3.5/5) – Doesn’t have a great release. Has several techniques that he can use but doesn’t do any of them remarkably well. Doesn’t show great handwork to create separation.
  • Sideline Work (4.5/5) – Gets two feet inbounds consistently. Shows the ability to work the sideline. Very solid body control.

Catch Ability (25)

Catch Ability: 15

  • Natural Catch Ability (7/10) – Good, not great, hands. Certainly has the capability to make big time catches but isn’t nearly consistent enough in that category.
  • Consistency (3/5) – His own worst enemy – when he gets in his own head, he struggles badly with concentration drops. Had two against Florida State. Too inconsistent. Dropped 7 passes in 2022.

Contested Catch Ability: 10

  • Vertical Ability (2.5/5) – Will not contest balls vertically. Doesn’t have the hops nor the explosion and contact ability to do so.
  • Catch Through Contact (3.5/5) – Catches well through traffic. Shows solid work getting positioning and being intense enough at the catch point. Didn’t have a lot of these opportunities.

Schematic Versatility (20)

Deep Threat/RAC: 10

  • Deep Threat Ability (3/5) – Doesn’t offer a lot of deep threat ability, simply average. Won’t stretch the field consistently. Looks like he will be more of a possession receiver.
  • Run After Catch Ability (3.5/5) – Offers suitable run after the catch ability. Nothing extraordinary. Doesn’t have much strength or creativity, which makes him not so effective on reverse actions. Flashes great plays after the catch but isn’t nearly consistent enough.

Run Blocking: 10

  • Strength (2.5/5) – Not a very strong run blocker. Doesn’t lock down defenders well.
  • Consistency (2.5/5) – Looks to have little-to-no technique as a run blocker.

Overall: (70.5) – 5th/7th Round
