2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OT Dalton Wagner, Arkansas

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OT Dalton Wagner, Arkansas

The biggest question mark with Dalton Wagner will be his ability to get low enough to maintain his leverage, and it’s something that he struggles with already. He’s a team captain in 2022, and a leader personality. At 6083 and 321 pounds, there’s no doubt that Wagner has the strength to hold up.

Dalton Wagner

OT – Arkansas Razorbacks

HT: 6083
WT: 321
WING: 8378
ARM: 3400
HAND: 1028
DOB: 10/5/1998
Year: Super Redshirt Senior
High School: Richmond-Burton (Richmond, IL)
HS Rating: 3 star (0.8613)

Projected Draft Grade: Project Tackle

Projection: 6th/7th Round

I guess there is some upside to Dalton Wagner’s game. He can overall improve his feet and find ways to get lower, and work on becoming more consistent with his hands.

Suffered a foot injury in 2017 that forced him to redshirt. Missed several games in 2021 with a finger injury that they couldn’t set back in place.

Dalton Wagner’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (40)

Athleticism: 20 –

  • Speed (7/10) – Overall, moves pretty well. Fairly quick, moves decently well. Doesn’t “stand out” per se, but has positive tools there to work with.
  • Lateral Quickness (6.5/10) – Lateral quickness at the next level might be a step slow. Looks susceptible to speed on the outside.

Strength/Power: 20 –

  • Upper Body Strength (6/7) – Very solid upper body strength. Extremely well built.
  • Lower Body Strength (5.5/7) – Shows good explosion from his lower half.
  • Brute Power (4.5/6) – Above average brute. Can just move people with his intensity and strength.

Lineman Technique (45)

Anchor/Plant: 10 –

  • Anchor Strength (3.5/5) – Good snap timing. Sets his anchor with ease. Shows a solid plant and holds up really well.
  • Plant Recovery (3.5/5) – I don’t see a lot of recovery ability once Wagner has been beat consistently. When he’s the stronger player, he can overpower the bull rush with his own second wind.

Hand Usage: 15 –

  • Hand Placement (4.5/7) – Hand placement looks quite unrefined at times, but I think the issue is more of him taking time to figure out how low he has to get to work against specific defenders.
  • Hand Strength (3/5) – Hand strength isn’t great. Struggles to contain blocks consistently, especially in pass protection.
  • Technique (1.5/3) – Gets lazy with his hands.

Pass Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4/5) – Didn’t find many people who could really push him, but he overall is very strong. When he did play against stronger defenders, he didn’t show a lot of bend with his body, looked more stiff.
  • Consistency (3.5/5) – Good consistent pass protector. Fairly reliable overall, struggles to get low enough to put hands on defenders with good bend.

Run Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4/5) – Solid pull blocker. Finds that gap well. Gets downhill with relative ease. Struggles with his balance at times. Doesn’t struggle with getting off of the snap and engaging with a defender.
  • Consistency (3.5/5) – Very consistent run blocker. Will be right there in his 90-95% effectiveness as a run blocker. Consistently works up to the second level and impacts downfield.

Persona (15)

Football IQ: 10 –

  • College Transition (3/5) – There will be a bit of an adjustment going to most NFL teams. Arkansas ran a heavy RPO style offense with elements of vertical spread.
  • Understanding of Assignments (4/5) – Does an outstanding job of recognizing stunts and picking up late rushers while passing off defenders to teammates. Shows a solid understanding of run gaps and how to protect them.

Overall: (75) – 4th/5th Round
