2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: RB Sean Tucker, Syracuse

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: RB Sean Tucker, Syracuse

On the field, Sean Tucker is an exciting prospect who brings so much pure running talent to the table. He’s a very smart, capable running back who has uncanny field vision and see’s gaps open up very well. The problems that Tucker has faced in the pre-draft process have mostly been on his medicals and interviews, which teams didn’t think he interviewed well. If he can overcome the medicals, he’s draftable. If not, he’s probably playing in the XFL next year.

I don’t really see the upside from Sean Tucker. I think he’s as athletic as he is going to get, and he’s built out his skillset as far as it’s going to go. I don’t see him becoming a better pass protector or receiver either, there just isn’t much for him to improve on.

Medically red-flagged at Indianapolis and sent back for a further examination after the Combine.

Sean Tucker’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (37)

Speed/Athleticism: 15 –

  • Speed (5/7) – Doesn’t seem to be a real speed threat. Is certainly quick, has good quick feet. Looks to be in the 4.50 range. He’s not going to outrun a secondary down the field when he breaks a big run.
  • Change of Direction (3/4) – Changes direction well. Has a nifty cutback. Showed solid cutback ability away from the play.
  • Body Control (3.5/4) – Really has some solid body control. Has a lot of subtle adjustments that he makes really well.  Can work the sideline tightrope.

Power/Strength: 10 –

  • Run Power (3.5/5) – Runs with good power. Rarely goes down on first contact. Excellent second-effort work.
  • Brute Strength (2.5/5) – Has some strength but won’t be a brute inside the tackles runner.

Burst/Explosion: 12 –

  • Acceleration (4/6) – Acceleration is a little bit slow for the position, but adequate for the NFL level.
  • Explosiveness (5/6) – Relatively explosive athlete. Hits the hole with some force when he has a crease.

Running Back Traits (25)

Field Vision: 15 –

  • Reading Blocks (8.5/10) – Very solid patience. Reads blocks very well. Excellent vision with reading blocks and following his teammates. Ridiculous field vision, it’s just off of the charts.
  • Understanding Defenders (4.5/5) – Has some manipulative moves to put on defenders. Will use his lack of size to dance behind blockers and lose the defender behind the blocker.

Contact Balance: 10 –

  • In Power (3.5/5) – Shows some good contact balance, although not great.
  • In Space (4/5) – Hard to bring down in space. A lot of defenders resorted to pushing him out of bounds along the sideline.

Passing Game Ability (33)

Catch Ability: 15 –

  • Natural Hands (6.5/10) – Good hands, nothing special but he can be utilized as a receiver out of the backfield. Very dangerous when schemed to space. Has stepped up and played so much better as a receiver in 2022. Still dealing with some concentration drops where he is caught thinking about the after-catch too early.
  • Catch Through Contact (2.5/5) – Didn’t really get the chance to display his ability to catch through contact.

Route Running: 5 –

  • Route Running (3/5) – Capable route runner. Was split out side in the spread scheme that Syracuse ran often, but didn’t appear to be a part of the read progression. He’s got to be careful not to draw blocking downfield penalties. Has good feet through cuts, but could condense it by a step or two.

Pass Block Ability: 13 –

  • Power (2/5) – Not a powerful pass protector at all. Watched defenders work through him like melted butter. Very willing regardless, just needs some coaching to handle defenders better.
  • Quickness/Bend (2.5/5) – Gets to the spot quickly. Doesn’t give up even after he’s lost the rep, tries to get in the way.
  • As a Chip Blocker (2/3) – Reads the check well.

Overall: (72.5) – 6th/PFA
