2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: DT Bryan Bresee, Clemson

The number one overall player in the recruiting class of 2020. Interesting play style – really just tries to get under the blocker and dictate wherever he moves. Very long body type. Bresee has reportedly benched 435 lbs, power cleaned 330, and deadlifted 585. He’s reportedly vertical jumped 30 inches and clocked in the high 4.7’s in the forty-yard-dash.

Projection: 2nd/3rd Round

There is definitely some upside to Bresee’s game, but the question is more whether it is obtainable upside. He can improve his first step and really work on becoming more explosive – I think there is some strength there to be found. His hands need to get better and he has to look like he knows what he’s doing. I don’t think he’s currently going into a rep with a plan, so if he can develop that, he can become very impactful.

Injured his wrist in week 1 against Georgia in 2021. Missed the majority of the 2021 season with a torn ACL in week 4. Struggled through the 2022 season with a knee injury.

Bryan Bresee’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (45)

Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (5.5/7) – Very smooth athlete. Will be among the best in the NFL when he enters. Reportedly ran a high 4.7. Looks like he should run in the 4.87-4.95 range.
  • Lateral Quickness (5/8) – Lateral quickness isn’t great. Struggles to change direction.

Strength/Power: 20

  • Upper Body Strength (5.5/7) – Good upper body strength. Can move off of blocks relatively well.
  • Lower Body Strength (3.5/7) – Seems to really struggle with his lower body. Can get overpowered and doesn’t have anything to fall back on.
  • Brute Power (3/6) – Average brute overall. Flashes the ability at times while at other times, he is lacking.

Explosion/Burst: 10

  • First Step Burst (3/5) – Has a good first step, not great.
  • Explosion (2.5/5) – Lacks a lot of explosion that he could have. You have to wonder if the injuries have messed with this.

Lineman Mechanics (20)

Containment: 10

  • Double Team Consistency (3/5) – Just didn’t play well enough to demand double teams while on the field.
  • Double Team Win (2.5/5) – Doesn’t typically hold double teams well.

Hand Technique: 10

  • Hand Placement (3/5) – Doesn’t really show any hand usage or desire to hand fight. Looks lost at times. Struggles to figure out how to win, doesn’t look like he has a plan.
  • Hand Strength (3/5) – Hand strength could be better especially considering his size, but it’s alright.

Defender Ability (30)

Tackling/Pursuit: 15

  • Tackling Ability (5.5/8) – Very strong tackler. Does a great job working off of blocks to impact run lanes. Has to wrap up more consistently.
  • Space Defending (1.5/3) – Not particularly good in space.
  • Pursuit Angles (2/4) – Doesn’t show much pursuit ability at all.

Instincts: 10

  • Recognition (3.5/5) – Flashes good recognition.
  • Natural Instincts (3.5/5) – Shows good instincts from time to time.

Pass Rush Ability: 5

  • Pass Rush Consistency (3.5/5) – Fairly good pass rusher. Has the athleticism to get after the quarterback from the interior.

Overall: (67) – 6th/PFA
