2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OT Tyler Steen, Alabama

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OT Tyler Steen, Alabama

A transfer from Vanderbilt, Tyler Steen walked into Alabama and started every game in 2023 at left tackle, posting a fairly efficient grade. He has a lot of really solid tools but still might need some cleaning up in areas. Steen can play both offensive tackle and guard positions, and not many people are talking about him throughout the year as a legitimate player. He moved to offensive tackle from defensive tackle his redshirt year in 2018 at Vanderbilt.

Projection: 2nd/3rd Round

There is some upside ability to Steen’s game, and it is mostly found in his feet. I think that if Steen can be more consistent through his drop, he’s going to be one hell of a player.

Sustained an ankle injury late in 2022 that he didn’t miss any time with.

Tyler Steen’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (40)

Athleticism: 20 –

  • Speed (7/10) – Speed isn’t great, but it’s not bad either. Probably right around average at the position.
  • Lateral Quickness (8/10) – Very solid lateral quickness, shows excellent quickness recovering to the outside.

Strength/Power: 20 –

  • Upper Body Strength (5.5/7)  – Solid upper body strength and looks very strong even against more power-type rushers.
  • Lower Body Strength (5/7) – Strong lower body. Holds up very well.  Can get caught not using his feet properly and tends to over-adjusts, but has the strength to hold up.
  • Brute Power (3.5/6) – Average “brute” strength, isn’t a guy who stands out too much in this area.

Lineman Technique (45)

Anchor/Plant: 10 –

  • Anchor Strength (4/5) – Excellent anchor. Does a great job holding up and setting. Deals with power well. Resets and reacts to late stunts. Even handles high hands well.
  • Plant Recovery (4/5) – Shows good recoverability when he’s starting to get beat.

Hand Usage: 15 –

  • Hand Placement (5.5/7) – Hand placement looks good for the most part. Has issues using his hands sometimes as a run blocker.
  • Hand Strength (4/5) – Very solid hand strength. Very strong upper body. Looks strong dealing with even more powerful rushers.
  • Technique (2/3) – Technique for the most part looks solid.

Pass Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4.5/5) – Good, stout, pass blocker. Has solid lean when he engages with the defender and offers some flexibility.
  • Consistency (3.5/5) – Fairly consistent pass blocker. Stats weren’t great on PFF, looked to be about 97% effective.

Run Block: 10 –

  • Strength (3.5/5) – Could be more consistent getting downhill and holding his block better. Tended not to lock into defenders and tried to stay square, especially in zone concepts.
  • Consistency (3/5) – Not nearly as consistent as a run blocker as he is a pass protector. Sometimes makes boneheaded decisions as a run blocker.

Persona (15)

Football IQ: 10 –

  • College Transition (4/5) – Played in two pro-style systems between Alabama and Vanderbilt. Shouldn’t have too many issues transitioning over.
  • Understanding of Assignments (4/5) – Understands stunts and assignments well. Has no issue handing off stunts properly. I wish he’s be a little bit more aggressive as a run blocker in zone schemes.

Overall: (81.5) – 1st/2nd Round
