2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: S Maxwell Worship, Vanderbilt

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: S Maxwell Worship, Vanderbilt

Maxwell Worship is just a likeable personality – someone who mixes well with anyone he meets and is instantly likeable. He lost his starting job in the backend of the 2022 season as Coach Lea started working in his younger players. Worship looks like he can play special teams until he develops his role on a defense and stick around on a roster for several years in the NFL.

Projection: 5th/7th Round

There is some upside for Worship, but it might be more in the form of a position change. I think Worship fits better closer to the box, very similar to the specific role player that Mark Robinson is to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Squeaky clean medicals. Has stayed healthy his entire career.

Maxwell Worship’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (35)

Speed/Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (4.5/7) – Very average athlete overall. Speed is good when he’s closing, looks like he can be liable in times. Would be much more effective in the box.
  • Lateral Quickness (3/4) – Lateral quickness is good. Moves well in space.
  • Body Control (3/4) – Shows good body control. Ridiculous workout regime. Prides himself in this area.

Strength: 10

  • Upper Body Strength (3.5/5) – Very solid upper body strength. Build is excellent – has 6% body fat.
  • Lower Body Strength (3.5/5) – Lower body strength for the most part is good. Has good leg drive and works through the tackle.

Hip Flexibility: 5

  • Change of Direction (3/5) – Change of direction is overall average. Doesn’t show a lot of hip twitch. Can look unnatural moving at times.

Defending Ability (40)

Tackling/Pursuit: 15

  • Tackling Ability (6/8) – Clean wrap up tackler. Can struggle with angles on bigger players, but delivers a heck of a hit. Vicious at the point of contact.
  • Pursuit Angles (5.5/7) – Solid pursuit angles. Does a great job coming downhill and taking good angles to attack the football.

Blitz Ability: 5

  • Timing (2.5/5) – Not much of a blitzer. Won’t impact too much as a pass rusher. Wasn’t asked to do it much at Vanderbilt because of his value in run gaps.

Coverage Ability: 20

  • Zone Coverage (7.5/10) – Flies downhill from his zone reacting. Good eyes. Can get caught looking at the wrong things. Not a guy I’d want to play single high, even though he did it a lot at Vanderbilt.
  • Man Coverage (3/5) – Capable in man coverage, not great but can hold his own against tight ends and other such players. Works really well through the catch point to make sure he disrupts it.
  • Space Defending (3.5/5) – Shows solid ability to play in space. Misses tackles upon occasion but for the most part was solid.

Intel/Instincts (20)

Instincts: 15

  • Pure Instincts (8/10) – Shows good instincts. Moves into the play very well. See’s and reacts well. Love his mental processing.
  • Consistency (3.5/5) – Sometimes can get sucked in by motion or other things so the consistency isn’t always there, but for the most part Max is solid.

Football IQ: 10

  • Play Recognition (6.5/10) – Reads run plays very well. Seems to struggle with pass concepts. Still working on getting better.

Overall: (76) – 4th/5th Round
