2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: TE Luke Musgrave, Oregon State

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: TE Luke Musgrave, Oregon State

Luke Musgrave missed the majority of the 2022 season with an injury, only playing in three of the first four games of the season. However, he’s shown every bit of athletic ability that is desired at the tight end position at the next level. His ability to stretch the field vertically will get him drafted a lot sooner than I think most people realize at this point in time.

Luke Musgrave

TE – Oregon State Beavers

HT: 6057
WT: 253
WING: 7948
ARM: 3258
HAND: 1038
DOB: 9/2/2000
Year: Super Junior
High School: Bend Senior (Bend, OR)
HS Rating: 3 star (0.8664)

Projected Draft Grade: Future Starter

Projection: 2nd/3rd Round

There is certainly some upside to Musgrave’s game, simply because of his lack of time on the field at Oregon State and how he never had a capable quarterback, he could be a more effective receiver than we currently realize that he is.

Missed 11 games in 2022 with a knee injury.

Luke Musgrave’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (40)

Speed/Athleticism: 15

Speed (6/7) – Excellent athlete, ridiculous speed at his size. Plays much faster than he tested at the Combine.

Change of Direction (2.5/4) – Struggles to change direction effectively.

Body Control (3.5/4) – Has shown some ridiculous body control. Works the sidelines and the back of the end zone extremely well.

Strength/Power: 15

Upper Body Strength (3.5/5) – Upper body strength is good. Does a good job working downhill.

Lower Body Strength (3.5/5) – Has good lower body strength. Has a lot of room to add to his frame.

Power (2.5/5) – Not a powerful guy, per say.

Acceleration/Burst: 10

Acceleration (4.5/5) – Excellent acceleration.

Explosiveness (4/5) – Good explosion. Texted above average.

Receiving Ability (35)

Route Running: 10

Footwork (3.5/5) – Nifty route runner, especially considering his size. Still needs 3-4 steps to get through a cut, something we hope to see him continue to improve.

Route Tree (3.5/5) – Route tree was good, but quarterback play limited him to more simple routes most of the time.

Catch Ability: 15

Natural Hands (8/10) – Shows solid receiving ability. Very natural receiver, shows very solid hands. Tracks the ball extremely well.

Consistency (3.5/5) – Suffered from a lot of drops in college, something that I wonder is more to the subpar quarterback play than his ability.

Contested Catch Ability: 10

Vertical Ability (4/5) – Can stretch the field – did most of his damage at Oregon State stretching the field.

Catch through contact (3.5/5) – Can make solid catches through contact. Consistency wasn’t always great.

Blocking Ability (20)

Pass Blocking: 10

Strength (2.5/5) – Not a strong pass blocker.

Technique (2.5/5) – Doesn’t have any real bend or ability to maintain leverage. Really just a big body to keep in the way of things.

Run Blocking: 10

Strength (3/5) – Not an incredibly strong run blocker.

Technique (3.5/5) – Technique is loose but capable. He doesn’t look like a guy you’re going to rely on to run behind.

Overall: (76.5) – 3rd Round
