Tre Herndon
Cornerback – Senior
Vanderbilt
Alex Khvatov: What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?
Tre Herndon: They gave me 5’11 ¾, weight 185 and 4.47 official 40 time from the pro day.
Alex Khvatov: Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?
Tre Herndon: I was training at 615 Sports Training in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. I was doing position work with Bernard Pollard. He played in the NFL. I am continuing to do drills with Coach Pollard and the Vandy coaches.
Alex Khvatov: Were you happy with your overall Pro Day results?
Tre Herndon: The whole process is the one to remember. I still had to complete 15 hours of course work at school. I was going to class and training at the same time. It was a lot of work for me. When I got there, I cleared my mind. Football is a big goal of mine. I made the most of what I had. I am satisfied with what I got. I wanted to jump better on the vert. I jumped 34.5. I wanted to do better in the forty. I made the most of my situation. I dropped two balls during the drills, but my footwork was really good. The work with Bernard really paid off. I did well in the drills. I had good interviews with scouts.
Alex Khvatov: How would you describe your overall performance in the College Gridiron Showcase?
Tre Herndon: That was fun. I was already training with Bernard. I had a few training sessions with him. It was a chance to get in front of scouts. It was another chance to compete and show my ability. I had the chance to wear my Vanderbilt stuff again. It helped me with my pro day. It wasn’t my first time performing in front of scouts.
Alex Khvatov: Who was the toughest WR at that all-star event?
Tre Herndon: My teammate from Vandy WR Trent Sherfield. He was the best WR there.
Alex Khvatov: Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?
Tre Herndon: I wasn’t really highly recruited. I was mostly recruited by C-USA teams. I was going to commit to Memphis. Then my coach told me to go to camp at Vanderbilt. It was called Friday Night Lights elite camp. I felt like I did well. I was shocked that they didn’t offer me. I wanted to come back. I went to another camp. After the second camp, I got offered.
Alex Khvatov: Why did you choose Vanderbilt?
Tre Herndon: I wanted to play against the best guys in the country. I got the opportunity and I had to take it.
Alex Khvatov: Describe your overall career.
Tre Herndon: As a team, we have always been known for our defense with coach Mason coming from Stanford. We have been a tough defensive team from 2014 up until last year. We had a little slip stopping the run this year. My freshman year, I was a special teams guy. I was learning the playbook. I tried to find my way. During my sophomore year, all of the work that I put in paid off that spring. I started week one. Then after that I build upon that role. I had the physical ability, but I needed to focus on the mental part. I started doing more film study. I improved my football IQ my junior year. Senior year, I had to move from outside to nickel corner. I feel like it definitely helped my footwork. I was guarding quicker guys. I had a more consistent year my senior season. Even though junior year was more productive in terms of statistics.
Alex Khvatov: What are your strengths?
Tre Herndon: I am mentally tough. I have learned how to move on to the next play. I have a short memory. I don’t shy away from any contact. I can cover. My coverage has gotten a lot better.
Alex Khvatov: What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?
Tre Herndon: I have worked on coming out of my breaks better. The breaks have to be precise and perfect. It doesn’t matter what coverage you are in.
Alex Khvatov: What is the highlight of your career up to this point?
Tre Herndon: I definitely take pride in becoming a captain my senior year. I came in as a quiet freshman. I finally became a team leader. Captains are voted by both coaches and players on our team.
Alex Khvatov: What is your favorite NFL team?
Tre Herndon: I was born in Detroit. I have been a Lions fan pretty much all of my life.
Alex Khvatov: Who is your favorite NFL player?
Tre Herndon: CB Casey Hayward. I look up to Casey. Andre Hal from the Texans is another guy. Buster Skrine from New York. I trained with him a few times, and he introduced me to the NFL.
Alex Khvatov: What is the most important trait for a CB?
Tre Herndon: From a mental standpoint, you have to have short memory. You have to move on after the mistake. CB is the second most difficult position in the NFL after QB. Physically, it is all about footwork. They put you into the right place. Feet over hands any day. You deal with quicker guys on the inside and bigger guys on the outside.
Alex Khvatov: What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?
Tre Herndon: Safety Zaire Jones. He is like my little brother. WR Kalija Lipscomb is a quick guy. Third one is Joejuan Williams, who was the other CB last year. He is a tall guy like Jalen Ramsey. He is a long corner who can run. He should make a big impact this upcoming season.
Alex Khvatov: Who is the best player that you have faced during your career?
Tre Herndon: WR Laquon Treadwell from Ole Miss during my sophomore year. We had a good battle. It would have been a lot different if I faced him this year. He got the best of me my sophomore year.
Alex Khvatov: Did you have any private workouts with NFL teams?
Tre Herndon: I had a workout with the LA Chargers a few of days after the pro day. I was doing drills and showing them my footwork. It went pretty well. I will participate in a Titans local day in a couple of weeks.
Alex Khvatov: What do you enjoy most about football?
Tre Herndon: The process of getting better. Going through the hard times, the summer workouts and building team chemistry together. You get up and do individual workouts when no one else is around. It is the process of becoming great.
Alex Khvatov: What are your hobbies?
Tre Herndon: Video games. I am big on Madden and Fortnite. My boys and I compete. I like to listen to music and go to YMCA to shoot some hoops. I like to hang out with friends.
Alex Khvatov: What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?
Tre Herndon: Helping people and younger guys from my city. I want to either coach back at Chattanooga or build an indoor facility where kids can train for a low price or even for free. A lot of parents can’t pay for D-I training services. I want to keep kids off the street and teach them life lessons.
Alex Khvatov: Finish the sentence, Tre Herndon is….
Tre Herndon: A hard worker. I am passionate about the game. I will do anything to make the 53-man roster in September.
