DT John Penisini (Utah) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

DT John Penisini (Utah) Interview

John Penisini

Defensive Tackle / Utah

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your overall experience at the 2020 East/West Shrine Bowl?

John Penisini:  It is a blessing to be out here, showcasing my ability in front of NFL teams.  I played against most of these Oregon guys.  They are top notch dudes.  To go up against different O-linemen here.  Play next to good pass rushers.  To play at an all-star game is a dream come true.

Alex Khvatov:  How did you wind up at Utah?

John Penisini:  My parents are from Tonga.  They had me in Palo Alto, CA.  I lived there till I was eight years old.  I moved out to Salt Lake City, Utah.  I used to watch BYU versus Utah games.  I always wanted to wear the red.  It’s always been a dream since I was little to play for Utah.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about your teammates on the D-line at Utah.  What was it like to play with those guys?

John Penisini:  We have a tradition.  We know what came before us.  We learned from the older guys.  Then when they left, we had to become the older guys and carry the tradition.  We called ourselves D-line U.  Our defensive numbers were good.

Alex Khvatov:  What have you learned from that coaching staff at Utah?

John Penisini:  I love those guys.  Most coaches preach family, but those guys really do mean it.  We feel it.  The team is diverse.  I can call my teammates and coaches.  They will support me.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

John Penisini:  The game against Washington.  We hadn’t beaten Washington in so long.  My first year at Utah, we had the chance to go up to Washington, but we came up short.  During my senior year, we ended up getting the win at Washington.  Everyone was on fire.  It was a total team effort.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

John Penisini:  Run stopping.  I am good at attacking my keys.  I am thick in my gap.  I will hit my guy and sit in the gap.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

John Penisini:  Today, I worked on multiple stances.  Generating more of a pass rush.  To get off and sack the QB.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about your teammate DE Bradlee Anae.

John Penisini:  We actually train together at Bommarito’s in Fort Lauderdale.  He is a high motor dude.  He is really smart.  His effort is off the charts.  He doesn’t get tired.  He doesn’t want to get subbed out.  He leads by example and everyone follows.

Alex Khvatov:  What one word best describes you?

John Penisini:  Accountable.
