Alex Khvatov: What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?
Austin Mitchell: 5’9, 170.
Alex Khvatov: How were you preparing for the 2020 season with no offseason training?
Austin Mitchell: I worked out at my old high school. I had a little weight set in my garage. I was running on the street and doing hills. I also went back to school and worked with our strength and conditioning coach.
Alex Khvatov: Besides football, what other sports did you play in high school?
Austin Mitchell: I ran track. I also played basketball until my sophomore year. I ran 100m, 200m, 4x100m, 4x400m and 400m. I made it to regionals in 100m.
Alex Khvatov: What positions did you play in high school?
Austin Mitchell: I played receiver, QB, little corner and RB.
Alex Khvatov: Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?
Austin Mitchell: I had interest from Jackson State and Southern.
Alex Khvatov: How did you wind up at Southeastern Louisiana?
Austin Mitchell: Stephen F. Austin was offering me as a walk-on. SE Louisiana also offered me as a walk-on. I earned a scholarship my redshirt sophomore year.
Alex Khvatov: How would you describe your overall career?
Austin Mitchell: Redshirt freshman year, I was fourth string in the beginning of camp. Then I worked my way up to second string. I was behind Juwan Dickey who was a good receiver for us. Sophomore year, I ended up starting and earned my scholarship. Junior year, I started again. I made all-conference that year, and the team did well. We lost in the second round of the playoffs. We were close to winning the conference championship. This past season, I was the leading receiver with eight TD’s on the team. I had 896 receiving yards on 57 catches.
Alex Khvatov: What are the team’s expectations this year?
Austin Mitchell: Do better than what we did last year. We want to get that ring and win the conference championship.
Alex Khvatov: What are your strengths?
Austin Mitchell: Speed and quickness. I do well on posts and deep balls.
Alex Khvatov: What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?
Austin Mitchell: Improve on catches in traffic. I also need to get more yards after the catch. I need to work on my curl routes and digs. I need to work on my short game more.
Alex Khvatov: What is the highlight of your career up to this point?
Austin Mitchell: The last season as a whole. Also during my redshirt freshman year, I scored three TD’s in a game on four catches and 150 yards. As a redshirt sophomore, I had five catches for 183 yards and a TD.
Alex Khvatov: What is the biggest lesson that you have taken away from your coaching staff?
Austin Mitchell: Always listen to what the coaches say. They have the key to an answer. Every one of my WR coaches taught me a lot about the game. I had four WR coaches during my career.
Alex Khvatov: What is your favorite NFL team?
Austin Mitchell: The Saints.
Alex Khvatov: Who is your favorite NFL player?
Austin Mitchell: Stefon Diggs and I used to watch a lot of DeSean Jackson. T.Y. Hilton is my number one guy.
Alex Khvatov: What players on your team should we keep an eye on for this upcoming season?
Austin Mitchell: Junior DB Ferlando Jordan, WR CJ Turner, DL Josh Carr, WR Javon Conner, QB Cole Kelley, OL Jalen Bell and OL Drew Jones.
Alex Khvatov: Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?
Austin Mitchell: LB Dante Olson from Montana.
Alex Khvatov: What is the most important trait for a WR?
Austin Mitchell: Separation and making the tough catches.
Alex Khvatov: What do you enjoy most about football?
Austin Mitchell: I love everything about it. I have been playing the game since six years old.
Alex Khvatov: What are your hobbies?
Austin Mitchell: I hang out with family, play Madden and work out.
Alex Khvatov: What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?
Austin Mitchell: I want to open up a business.
