2023 Senior Bowl Watchlist Scouting Notes: FS Trey Dean III, Florida

Florida safety Trey Dean III has been a starter from almost the moment he stepped on campus. For all of his experience (28 starts entering 2022), you would think he would be more consistent in almost every area of his game. Dean flashes, but it’s not enough to allow the thought to creep into your mind that he could be very good. He’s played many roles across the Florida defense, so maybe that has just jumbled up his mind. I don’t know. What I do know is that I’m not impressed with the super senior, and I don’t know if I’d be okay drafting him.

Trey Dean III scouting notes

Pros:

  • Has good athletic ability, not a great athlete.
  • Does a good job in deep coverage but needs to keep the play in front of him.
  • Not particularly a strong defender in space. Has shown some improvement in this area against smaller defenders in 2022.
  • Instincts are typically good.

Cons:

  • I believe that Combine testing will raise concerns in the media.
  • Average upper body strength.
  • Doesn’t change direction very well. He struggles to turn and run in coverage.
  • Not a strong tackler. Struggles against bigger bodies.
  • Pursuit angles are alright. Struggles to work through traffic effectively.
  • Likes to try to cheat up. Has to have more zone coverage discipline. Can get his eyes caught in the backfield and lose track of his zone.
  • Struggles with positioning and balancing pass defense vs run defense.
  • Not quick recognizing plays.
