2023 Senior Bowl Watchlist Scouting Notes: WR Jaxon Janke, South Dakota State

Jaxon Janke is a very intriguing prospect coming from the FCS ranks. Janke has a good frame and can attack the catch point. The defining trait to his game, however, is his ability to maintain concentration through extreme circumstances and secure catches with his strong hands. He’s good after the catch, so really, he has all of the tools to be an excellent weapon in the NFL, a Cooper Kupp-level player.

Jaxon Janke scouting notes

Pros:

  • Good speed. He should run in the 4.51-4.56 range.
  • Good change of direction ability.
  • Decent body control.
  • Good acceleration.
  • Very explosive athlete.
  • Solid route runner on timing concepts. He is very crisp through his cuts.
  • Intensity is unreal, and stays hyper-focused through traffic. Very strong hands. Very impressive catch radius.
  • Very consistent receiver. Has kept his drop rate under 9% his entire career, per PFF. Had just one drop through the first 8 games of 2022 (58 targets).
  • Can win those contested catch balls when he needs to. Has good explosive ability.
  • Shows extraordinary ability to make catches through traffic.
  • Runs after the catch extremely well. Was utilized as a returner throughout points of his career and was very dangerous in the open field.

Cons:

  • Ran a very simple route tree at SDSU. He will have a lot to learn at the next level.
  • Not as nuanced as a route runner as I’d like to see.
  • Average run blocker.
  • Need to see him play against a higher level of competition to really test the strong hands.
