2023 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: S Brandon Joseph, Notre Dame

Brandon Joseph emerged as a sophomore at Northwestern before transferring to Notre Dame during his senior year. He still has another year of eligibility remaining, but it will be very surprising if he doesn’t declare for the NFL Draft. He’s a very good strong safety prospect, someone who can support well in the box but also flashes the speed and instincts to make big plays down the field.

Brandon Joseph scouting notes

Pros:

  • Good, not great, speed.
  • For the position group, he has good power.
  • Good, not great, hip rotation.
  • Strong tackler, especially in space. Works downhill well and shows a good tackling form and wrap up. Doesn’t shy away from bigger targets either, delivers a good hit.
  • Works very well through traffic in and outside of the box to get a good tackle angle. Very solid pursuit defender.
  • Reads and reacts quickly. Smart – not afraid to attack the football.
  • Very strong space defender.
  • Reads and diagnoses quickly. Moves into position efficiently.

Cons:

  • Lacks upper body strength to be a more effective tackler, won’t stop runners cold in their tracks.
  • Can be early to the ball and draw pass interference penalties. He is late to react at times, doesn’t see the play as well as he could.
  • Instincts are up and down. Flashes high-level IQ plays and other times is badly out of place. Up and down consistency.
