2023 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: DE Gervon Dexter, Florida

Gervon Dexter is a brute athlete who can move people relatively easily and has the prototype NFL body size. He’s played very well against SEC competition and has a chance to put together a dominant season in the SEC. The only issue with Dexter is that we were expecting a huge season from him in 2022, and he failed to meet expectations. NFL teams may weigh that against him.

Gervon Dexter scouting notes

Pros:

  • Good athlete, especially for his size. Has excellent range. Plays his half field all the way to the boundary.
  • Very strong upper body. Knows he’s very strong.
  • Dexter is very much a brute.
  • Very solid first step. Explosive defender.
  • Solid hand placement. Starts low and springs upward which makes him very difficult to handle from the snap.
  • Very strong, heavy hands. Deflects blockers guard with relative ease.
  • Tough, physical tackler who wants to impose his will on runners.

Cons:

  • Was manhandled at times by NFL level offensive linemen – which tells me that Dexter doesn’t understand leverage very well.
  • He drew double teams sometimes, but offensive lines had other players to worry about more.
  • Doesn’t win well off of double teams. He really struggles in this part of his game.
  • Tends not to wrap up but rather tries to fling runners. He will draw some facemask penalties with his brash style.
  • I don’t see a lot of recognition ability from Dexter.
  • Lacks the pass rushing consistency to become a force.
