2023 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: WR Dontay Demus Jr, Maryland

Dontay Demus Jr is a very physical boundary receiver who isn’t afraid of contact. Leaving Maryland with 34 career starts, Demus has been a robust and able-bodied receiver in college. I think that while he offers some vertical ability and will provide some size disadvantages at the next level, Demus lacks some speed and athleticism that he could otherwise use to win those matchups. He might have a shot at developing out, but with his age and experience, it’s highly unlikely.

Dontay Demus Jr scouting notes

Pros:

  • Demus is a very explosive athlete.
  • Has a decent release. Offers some variety, though sometimes he can take too long trying to open up.
  • Outstanding catch radius. Strong hands. Capable of corralling balls from difficult angles.
  • Consistently the best receiver on the field. Demus was targeted tremendously in 2021 for his consistency in key situations.
  • Offers some excellent explosive ability which makes him a threat to climb the ladder and win vertical matchups.
  • Decent run blocker. Holds up on the perimeter well. Very stout and consistent with his run blocking.

Cons:

  • Offers decent speed, but nothing game changing, per se.
  • Struggles with concentration drops.
  • Body control might not be where people want him to be.
  • Suffered an ugly knee injury early in the blowout loss to Iowa in 2021.
