2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: DE Francis Bemiy, Southern Utah

Francis Bemiy Jr is one of the more exciting under-the-radar prospects in the class with his frame and upside. He held four other offers coming out of Montreal, including UMass, UConn, FAU, and New Mexico. At the Tropical Bowl, he gathered a lot of attention for his prototypical frame and athletic ability and piqued NFL team’s interest.

Francis Bemiy Jr

3-4 DE – Southern Utah Thunderbirds

HT: 6035
WT: 264
WING: 8078
ARM: 3348
HAND: 900
DOB: N/A
Year: Super Senior
High School: Carnegie Riverside (Montreal, Canada)
Rating: 3-star (0.8255)

Projected Draft Grade: Developmental Rotator

Projection: 7th/PFA

Francis Bemiy’s upside is completely predicated on how he builds his upper body frame. Most of his strength is predicated right now in his lower body, which is awesome for power, but the fact that he weighs 265 lbs already and still has room to grow is extraordinary and speaks to his potential and upside.

Has stayed healthy his entire career. Very consistently available.

Francis Biemy’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (45)

Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (4/7) – Speed is average. While he’s quick and explosive, his long speed is often exposed when he’s in pass rushing situations chasing the quarterback.
  • Lateral Quickness (6/8) – Shows some very solid lateral quickness. Really can penetrate a gap quickly with that quickness, finds ways to get skinny.

Strength/Power: 20

  • Upper Body Strength (3.5/7) – Has room to fill out his upper frame. Looks like he still is suitably strong, but there is upside there.
  • Lower Body Strength (6/7) – Very powerful lower half. Thick boy. Powerful lower body.
  • Brute Power (3.5/6) – Not particularly a brute because of the disconnect between his upper and lower body strength, but he has brute upside and tendencies.

Explosion/Burst: 10

  • First Step Burst (3.5/5) – Good first step, not great. Comes off his first step with a lot of power.
  • Explosion (4/5) – Explosive athlete. Lower body just breathes with explosion.

Lineman Mechanics (20)

Containment: 10

  • Double Team Consistency (2/5) – Didn’t take double teams often, but when he did he struggled.
  • Double Team Win (2/5) – Does not work well against double teams, gets caught up in traffic and doesn’t know how to free himself.

Hand Technique: 10

  • Hand Placement (2.5/5) – Hand placement is alright, nothing fancy or great. Doesn’t show the ability to create especially after he’s been locked up. Doesn’t have the finesse ability to free himself.
  • Hand Strength (3/5) – Doesn’t have the consistent hand strength that I want to see. Struggles to get off of blocks.

Defender Ability (30)

Tackling/Pursuit: 15

  • Tackling Ability (5/8) – Decent tackler. Very willing to be involved as a run defender. Missed 19.4% of tackle opportunities last year, per PFF.
  • Space Defending (1.5/3) – Lacks some athletic ability and balance to be a truly effective space defender.
  • Pursuit Angles (2.5/4) – Has a little bit of range, but won’t be able to extend a play to the boundary. Angles otherwise look pretty good.

Instincts: 10

  • Recognition (2/5) – Wants to be a disrupter, so you don’t see a lot of play recognition or ability to play contain very well.
  • Natural Instincts (2/5) – Doesn’t show a lot of instincts.

Pass Rush Ability: 5

  • Pass Rush Consistency (2.5/5) – Wasn’t consistently productive as a pass rusher at Southern Utah, ended his career with just 13 sacks, all collected over his last 3 seasons.

Overall – (65.5) – 7th round/PFA
