2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Logan Bonner, Utah State

A transfer from Arkansas State, Logan Bonner is an intriguing quarterback with the potential to be a solid minor-league option at the next level. He has natural arm talent, that much is absolute, and offers limited mobility. His grit and passion for the game are undeniable. Having suffered through two injuries, Bonner is a player who has stuck football out and pushed through it all. Teams will like his personality and already loved his arm at the Tropical Bowl, which could be the redeeming factor to his game.

I’m really not sure that there is any real upside left to Logan Bonner’s game. He’s a seventh-year player who has taken a medical redshirt, utilized his covid year, and has 34 starts to show for it. Durability will be a question mark with him overall, but what parts of his game can he improve? There’s not a lot there that people typically improve on. I think Bonner, at this point, is what he is, and it looks like he can make a respectable career for himself in Canada or another football league.

Suffered injuries in two seasons that allowed him to take a medical redshirt. He tore his ACL 75% of the way at the end of 2021 and tried to come back from it too soon in 2022. Cowboys doctor Dan Cooper performed the surgery to repair his ACL in January 2022.

Logan Bonner’s scouting report

Quarterback Ability (65)

Arm Talent: 20

  • Arm Strength (8/10) – Has adequate arm strength for the college level but looks like he will be below average in the NFL. Ran a very vertical attack and was always pushing the ball downfield. Has the durability. Ball somewhat dies at the end of the throw when trying to push it deep, but effective range appears to be around 50-55 yards.
  • Touch Ability (3.5/5) – Has a very nice touch throw. Flashes the ability to layer throws through coverage.
  • Release (4/5) – Good, quick release. High release point helps account for his lack of size.

Accuracy/Placement: 25

  • Accuracy (8.5/15) – Box accurate quarterback. Tends to very much underthrow the deep ball. Throws very well off platform. Flashes the ability to throw through tight creases. So inconsistent, misses passes that he should not be missing.
  • Placement/Vision (5/10) – Will try to force the ball over the middle sometimes into traffic across his body. There are bad habits that need to be worked out. Does tend to throw behind receivers.

Pocket Presence: 10

  • Pocket Positioning (2.5/5) – Doesn’t position as well in the pocket as he could.
  • Pocket Maneuverability (3.5/5) – Has the ability to maneuver to avoid sacks and tackles for loss. Struggles to make decisions against immense pressure, like a free rusher. Hesitates. Flashes the ability to maneuver the pocket like a pro and step up to space.

Footwork: 10

  • Consistency (3/5) – Decent feet as he drops. Platform looks alright – need to make sure he hasn’t lost his muscle memory from a couple of injuries.
  • Quickness (3.5/5) – Good foot quickness.

Athleticism (20)

Mobility: 12

  • Outside of the pocket (4/7) – Moves well outside of the pocket. Suitable athleticism, although not much better than average. Bonner makes up for it with his ability to throw accurately and effectively off-platform.
  • Downfield Ability (2.5/5) – Limited mobile ability. Wasn’t running any designed QB run concepts, but offers average ability to move the ball downfield in space. Can scramble and pick up a few yards.

Improvability: 8

  • Natural Improvability (2/4) – I don’t see a lot of improvability from Bonner that works very well. Struggles to create unless it’s with his legs. Even then, he isn’t very effective.
  • Play Extension (3/4) – Absolutely can extend plays with his movement ability.

Intelligence (15)

Football IQ/Field Vision: 10

  • Football Intelligence (2.5/5) – Tends to keep his eyes downfield while avoiding pressure and moving in the pocket. Struggles with continuing to read the coverage through the play. Makes too many pre-snap decisions. Misses a lot of wide-open receivers that are schematically designed due to pre-snap decisions.
  • Ability to read pre-snap (2/5) – I don’t see a lot of ability from Bonner to correctly identify pre-snap alignments. Struggles to pick up on free rushers.

Overall: (66) – UDFA
