2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: LB Tylar Wiltz, Pittsburgh

A transfer from Missouri State. Tylar Wiltz looks to be a half-field linebacker who has an impressive range to the boundaries to cover the flats and outbreaking routes underneath. His struggle is when he has to stretch vertically. Wiltz doesn’t work down the field well to cover tight ends and running backs with speed that can go deep. Part of that is because of his lack of coverage ability and the minor limitations he has athletically. He’s still a solid option

I think that Tylar Wiltz has some upside based on his mentality – on top of learning how to drop effectively into the hooks and curls. He’s a player who tends to overthink things instead of just playing and going with his instinct. Once he builds confidence in himself, Wiltz’s potential is very solid.

Has stayed relatively healthy throughout his career, minus the regular bumps and bruises.

Tylar Wiltz’s Scouting Report

Athletic Ability (30)

Speed/Athleticism: 20

  • Speed (6/8) – Solid speed. Plays fast and well from side to side.
  • Lateral Quickness (5/7) – Very solid lateral quickness. Moves well, is fluid, shifts well.
  • Body Control (2/5) – Struggles to turn and change directions, hips are a little bit tight.

Strength/Power: 10

  • Upper Body Strength (2/3) – Upper body strength is good, not great. Struggles to control tackles at times.
  • Lower Body Strength (2.5/3) – Solid lower body. Explodes well and moves with relative ease.
  • Brute Power (2/4) – Not much of a brute. Not a big part of his game. Will have explosive tackles but more so as a speed-to-power type hit.

Defending Ability (40)

Tackling/Pursuit: 15

  • Tackling Ability (5/9) – Decent wrap up. Struggles to wrap up bigger ball carriers effectively. Wants to attack with speed to power.
  • Pursuit Angles (3.5/6) – Could take better pursuit angles more consistently. Pursues well to the boundary. Shows impressive range in that area of his game.

Blitz Ability: 5

  • Blitz Timing (2.5/5) – Doesn’t time his blitzes well.

Coverage Ability: 20

  • Space Defending (7/10) – Competent defender in space. Does a good job closing effectively and making the play when he has to. Struggled with angles at times which leads him to under pursue plays.
  • Man Coverage (3/5) – Flashes some man coverage ability at times. Played well at the Tropical Bowl in 1v1 situations against bigger, better athletes like Camren McDonald. Shows solid ability to play to the catch point. Gets grabby when he’s beat. Liability if he has to cover downfield.
  • Zone Coverage (3.5/5) – Settles into zone coverage pretty well. Good awareness and works the tip drill well. Feels his zone well and reacts accordingly to the play in front of him.

Intel/Instincts (25)

Football IQ: 10

  • Play Recognition (3.5/5) – Flashes the ability to pick up on plays and concepts, but not consistently. Gets in his own head too much and overthinks the play.
  • Understanding of Concepts (3.5/5) – Picks up on concepts well and how to play them, needs to be more confident in himself and do as his instincts tell him.

Instincts: 15

  • Natural Instincts (7.5/10) – Has the instincts and has played a lot of football. Has a natural feel for the play, knows how to respond, but has a tendency to overthink the play.
  • Consistency (3/5) – Not as consistent yet as he can be. Typically in a good position, but has to just go out there and play.

Overall: (72.5) – 5th/7th Round
