2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: CB Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, TCU

A willing run defender, Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson plays on the boundary for TCU, but will be projected into the slot at the next level. He’s an excellent athlete with a lot of juice and flexibility, but his frame and lack of play strength with limit him even in a slot role. THT is the nephew of TCU legend LaDanian Tomlinson and chose TCU over Baylor, Kansas State, and Iowa State.

Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson’s entire career, in my opinion, is predicated on whether he’s too small to hold up or if he’s an outlier dawg who can carve a role on the boundary like Asante Samuel Jr did. I don’t think there’s much more he can get better at. I do believe that he will be able to play on the boundary.

Has done an excellent job of staying available throughout his career.

Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson scouting report

Athletic Ability (40)

Speed/Athleticism: 20

  • Speed (6.5/7) – Very good speed. Can fly when he needs to. Should run a sub 4.4.
  • Lateral Quickness (3.5/5) – Lateral quickness is good. Does a good job getting up to speed quickly coming odd of that movement.
  • Acceleration (3/4) – Acceleration is good. Gets up to speed relatively quickly.
  • Explosion (3.5/4) – Very explosive athlete.

Strength: 10

  • Upper Body Strength (2/5) – Lacks a lot of upper body play strength to make him a more effective defender.
  • Lower Body Strength (3/5) – Good lower body strength. Probably the best part of his frame.

Hip Flexibility: 10

  • Change of Direction (4.5/5) – Fluid hips. Excellent athlete. Moves and changes direction fluidly.
  • Recovery (4/5) – Shows good recovery ability with insane burst.

Defensive Ability (15)

Tackling: 10

  • Tackling Ability (5/7) – Not a great wrap up tackler, but THT makes some plays through blocks to trip ball carriers up. Attacks the ball to try and strip the runner. Puts a lot of effort into run defense. Very willing run defender.
  • Space Defending (2.5/3) – Very solid and reliable space defender.

Pursuit: 5

  • Pursuit Angles (2.5/5) – Pursuit angles are very meh. Struggles to get it right consistently and is just a step behind.

Coverage Ability  (40)

Man Coverage: 15

  • Man Coverage Ability (7/10) – Decent man coverage ability. I like his ability to use the sideline as an additional defender. Reacts very well to the ball in man coverage.
  • Physicality (4/5) – Physical enough to contest catches, even when he’s at an extreme size mismatch. Tends to get grabby at times.

Zone Coverage: 10

  • Zone Coverage Ability (4.5/7) – A step slow sometimes when reacting to the catch point. Settles into his zone with proper depth. Wants to play the ball and make a big play when reacting.
  • Play Recognition (2.5/3) – Good recognition ability in zone coverage. Seamlessly adjusts to the play.

Press Coverage: 15

  • Press Coverage Ability (8/10) – I really like his positioning in press. Does a good job staying with the receiver through breaks and cuts.
  • Physicality (3/5) – Lacks a lot of physicality in press, prefers to play with the receiver and use his athleticism to disrupt the play at the catch point.

Overall: (78) – 2nd/3rd Round
