2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: WR Zay Flowers, Boston College

There is absolutely no doubt that Zay Flowers will be a consummate professional at the next level, and money doesn’t phase him. He was approached by boosters from other schools in the 2022 offseason about leaving Boston College, reporting that he turned down six-figure offers. Where do we find dudes like that? With 37 collegiate career starts on his belt, Flowers is practically a veteran receiver with an impeccable understanding of the sport.

I don’t think there’s really any upside here from Zay Flowers. He’s pretty much a finished product. Maybe you can get him on the jugs machines and improving his hands but overall, he’s a flawless athlete, and his size is going to limit him in contested catch situations.

Has done a great job staying healthy and finding ways to avoid big hits.

Zay Flowers’ scouting report

Athletic Ability (25)

Speed/Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (6.5/7) – Possesses game-breaking speed. Incredible athlete. Excellent speed.
  • Change of Direction (4/4) – Excellent change of direction ability. Has a ridiculous cutback.
  • Body Control (4/4) – Excellent body control. Zay Flowers’ athletic ability is out of this world. Capable of multiple cuts and moves on a single play.

Acceleration/Burst: 10

  • Acceleration (4.5/5) – Accelerates seamlessly and very well. Seamless, like a Corvette.
  • Explosiveness (5/5) – Incredibly explosive. Should test remarkably well.

Receiver Technique (25)

Route Running: 15

  • Footwork (6/7) – Solid route runner. Commands the rep every play. Smooth through breaks, gets in and out of them quickly and almost effortlessly.
  • Route Tree (4.5/5) – Ran a strong route tree at Boston College. Very deep complex with some option routes. Ran from every position on the outside.
  • Nuances (2.5/3) – Very nuanced as a route runner. Understands how to sell his breaks better.

Release/Flexibility: 10

  • Release Ability (4/5) – Has an excellent release and gets off of multiple types of coverage.
  • Sideline Work (3/5) – Doesn’t show a lot of ability to work the sideline and get two feet inbounds well.

Catch Ability (25)

Catch Ability: 15

  • Natural Catch Ability (8.5/10) – Very solid hands. Used in a vast variety of ways in the Boston College offense. Flowers has a good catch radius.
  • Consistency (2/5) – Suffers a terrible drop rate – 10% consistently over his career (24 drops on 347 career targets).

Contested Catch Ability: 10

  • Vertical Ability (2.5/5) – Has solid vertical ability but struggles to make catches through contact. I don’t think he will win the balls that send him up high.
  • Catch Through Contact (2.5/5) – Don’t see him consistently catch through contact. Struggles with securing the ball at times through traffic.

Schematic Versatility (20)

Deep Threat/RAC: 10

  • Deep Threat Ability (4/5) – Ridiculous deep threat. Speed and athleticism makes him easy to lose deep down field. Tracks the ball extremely well.
  • Run After Catch Ability (4.5/5) – Flowers is a serious RAC threat. Could make an immediate impact in the NFL with this ability. So difficult to bring down in the open field.

Run Blocking: 10

  • Strength (3.5/5) – Very solid run blocker, especially considering his size. Holds up well, attacks well. Shows good technique, like he takes pride in it.
  • Consistency (3.5/5) – Didn’t run block a lot, but when he did he was effective.

Overall: (82) – 1st/2nd Round
