2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: OT Jaelyn Duncan, Maryland

Jaelyn Duncan has been a 4-season starter at left tackle at Maryland. His tape has been inconsistent, however, and he’s struggled in bigger games. He will be grilled at interviews to see where his mental focus is. Regardless, he should put up monster numbers in testing and has the athleticism and strength to hold up at the NFL level.

Jaelyn Duncan’s weight might be a bit of a concern, as he dropped 25 pounds before the Senior Bowl and came in at less than 300 pounds. Can he maintain his healthy weight? Can he build out his lower frame? If Duncan can build power in his lower body, he’s going to help a lot of his potential be realized. I just don’t know if he will get there.

Missed a game for Maryland with an injury in 2022. Other than that, Duncan has stayed healthy.

Jaelyn Duncan’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (40)

Athleticism: 20 –

  • Speed (9/10) – Excellent speed for the position group. Very effective pulling blocker. Gets where he needs to go quickly. Should test well at the Combine.
  • Lateral Quickness (8/10) – Good lateral quickness. Very quick feet.

Strength/Power: 20 –

  • Upper Body Strength (5/7) – Very strong upper body. Handles himself well with leverage.
  • Lower Body Strength (5/7) – Lower half is stout. Shows a decent anchor.
  • Brute Power (3/6) – Not particularly a brute player. Can body defenders at times but his style is more agility.

Lineman Technique (45)

Anchor/Plant: 10 –

  • Anchor Strength (4/5) – Has a very decent anchor. Does a great job staying square. Starts to get wide when handling power.
  • Plant Recovery (2.5/5) – Doesn’t always show a lot of recoverability once he is on the ropes. Tends to get too wide as he gets into his anchor and loses his leverage.

Hand Usage: 15 –

  • Hand Placement (6/7) – Very solid initial hand placement. Does a great job attacking downhill. Works his hands to the inside shoulder and does a solid job grabbing and getting the defender off balance.
  • Hand Strength (4/5) – Good hand strength. Handles a lot of the power moves and rips defenders try to use against him well.
  • Technique (2.5/3) – Has several techniques that he uses very well. Stab punches and other measures keep defenders off balance.

Pass Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4/5) – Stout pass protector. Shows a good base for the most part, looks solid in his drop and was pretty consistent. Struggled with excellent speed rushes.
  • Consistency (3/5) – He’s a bit susceptible to the inside counter, especially when he’s 1v1 on an island. Duncan tends to overset a bit which hurts him. Can lean too far forward and end up thrown down. Allowed 7 sacks in two seasons as a starter (2022 and 2019), 19 in his career. Ended the season with 10 penalties in three separate season (2022, 2021, and 2019) with 5 declined penalties.

Run Block: 10 –

  • Strength (4/5) – Gets downhill very well. Difficult to fight against his power. Fairly effective working up into the second level of the play.
  • Consistency (3.5/5) – Decent run blocker. Tries to pull defenders with him on slants sometimes that will get him in trouble.

Persona (15)

Football IQ: 10 –

  • College Transition (4/5) – Maryland ran both RPO and classic west coast schemes, playing both zone and gap assignments. His transition should be relatively seamless.
  • Understanding of Assignments (3/5) – Struggled way too often in that offense for my liking. Missed assignments, looked like in certain games that mentally he checked out.

Overall: (83) – 1st Round
