2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: RB Deuce Vaughn, Kansas State

Deuce Vaughn could be interpreted as a clone of Darren Sproles. The two share the same alma mater, remarkably similar sizes and builds, and have a knack for both speed and catching the football. Was used both as a running back and a slot weapon – oftentimes sent in motion.  He scored 22 touchdowns as a sophomore, and 12 as a junior.

Is there really upside with Vaughn? I don’t believe so. I think he’s peaked as an athlete and I don’t see him making much more of an impact than he already has with his grade. He’s going to be a strong contributor somewhere, as long as his lack of size doesn’t hold him up at the next level.

Has stayed healthy throughout his collegiate career.

Deuce Vaughn’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (37)

Speed/Athleticism: 15 –

  • Speed (5/7) – Good speed, but not ground breaking. Won’t outrun a lot of secondaries. Will, however, surprise you with his quickness. Should probably run in the 4.52-4.57 range.
  • Change of Direction (3.5/4) – Changes direction seamlessly. Has an excellent cut when he starts working up  field.
  • Body Control (3/4) – Has solid body control. Has an unlimited arsenal of moves and subtilties to make defenders miss.

Power/Strength: 10 –

  • Run Power (2/5) – Not a guy who will consistently run between the tackles and make big plays that way.
  • Brute Strength (2/5) – Very little “brute” strength, but runs so low to the ground that he creates a lot of power with leverage.

Burst/Explosion: 12 –

  • Acceleration (5/6) – Acceleration is smooth and seamless.
  • Explosiveness (5.5/6) – Extremely explosive runner. Has a great hop.

Running Back Traits (25)

Field Vision: 15 –

  • Reading Blocks (8/10) – Reads his blocks extremely well. Very patient runner, waits for space and explodes through the crease. Consistent ball security.
  • Understanding Defenders (4/5) – Manipulates defenders extremely well.

Contact Balance: 10 –

  • In Power (2.5/5) – Doesn’t show too much contact balance between the tackles, but is more difficult to locate.
  • In Space (4.5/5) – Contact balance is ridiculous in space. Low center of gravity allows him to effectively bounce off of tackles.

Passing Game Ability (33)

Catch Ability: 15 –

  • Natural Hands (8/10) – Excellent receiver. Secures the ball well, has soft hands. Large catch radius. Extremely reliable receiver.
  • Catch Through Contact (3.5/5) – Shows the ability to hold onto the ball through big contact. Makes catches routinely in traffic.

Route Running: 5 –

  • Route Running (4/5) – Smooth, swift route runner. Understands how to work open. Crisp routes that show lots of understanding and technique.

Pass Block Ability: 13 –

  • Power (2/5) – Almost no power, simply doesn’t have the frame to hold up. Has some technique to make up for it and made some impressive blocks in pass protection throughout his career.
  • Quickness/Bend (2.5/5) – Quickly positions, is more of a player who just gets in the way.
  • As a Chip Blocker (1/3) – Will not be an effective chip blocker.

Overall: (75) – 3rd/4th Round
