2023 Senior Bowl Scouting Notes: CB Julius Brents, Kansas State - NFL Draft Blitz

2023 Senior Bowl Scouting Notes: CB Julius Brents, Kansas State

A transfer from Iowa, Julius Brents looks like he could be a solid zone coverage cornerback but struggles in man and press assignments. He is a long coverage corner who can deliver a big hit but struggles to wrap up or take proper angles consistently. His upside is good if it can ever be realized, and it should get him picked relatively high. But, at worst, Brents is a solid special teams player who can provide depth on a roster.

Julius Brents scouting notes

Pros:

  • Good speed. Will be suspect to faster receivers but suitable.
  • Excellent work changing direction. Solid hip rotation.
  • Fairly consistent in zone coverage. Looks like he can struggle with positioning, especially when he’s working the outside voids.
  • Reads and recognizes concepts well in zone coverage for the most part.

Cons:

  • Takes a bit to get up to speed. Doesn’t show a lot of explosiveness.
  • Average upper body strength.
  • Struggles to recover.
  • Can deliver a big hit, but isn’t often willing. Doesn’t wrap up well.
  • Not a very wiling run support player. Pursuit angles aren’t great.
  • He tends to play trail and doesn’t have the recovery to burst back into position on a well-thrown ball.
  • Very physical in man coverage and will draw a lot of flags early.
  • Not the greatest in press coverage. Jumps on fakes and settles into trail which opens him up to the deep ball.
  • Lacks the physicality in press that is needed to jam receivers off the line.
