2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: DT Dante Stills, West Virginia

Dante Stills is an intriguing NFL prospect with the ability to both play outside and inside in just about every defensive scheme in the book. His brother, Darius, played defensive line at West Virginia, and his father, Gary, was an all-Big East linebacker for West Virginia before playing in the NFL with Kansas City, Baltimore, and the St. Louis Rams.

Projection:

Dante Stills doesn’t seem to have a great upside to his game – almost seems to be a finished product. I think he’s gotten as big as he’s going to get. Dante could work on his lower body strength and maybe becoming a more disruptive pass rusher by playing more aggressively. At the end of the day though, how much can he really improve on his game? I think Stills has capped out at this point and is about the best that he will be – a solid rotational player.

Has stayed healthy just about his entire career.

Dante Stills’ scouting report

Athletic Ability (45)

Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (5.5/7) – Stills has great speed for the position, and may test well at the combine.
  • Lateral Quickness (6.5/8) – Explosive lateral quickness. Moves very well in this capacity. Solid athlete.

Strength/Power: 20

  • Upper Body Strength (5.5/7) – Good upper body strength. Doesn’t bend well. Strong arms allow him to make some arm tackles that a lot of players can’t make.
  • Lower Body Strength (4/7) – Average lower body.
  • Brute Power (3/6) – Limited in brute power compared to other players in the class because of his lack of size, but has the ability to use his strength to help command the repetition.

Explosion/Burst: 10

  • First Step Burst (3.5/5) – First step isn’t consistent, but when he’s on it, he’s devastating. When on time, it is extremely good.
  • Explosion (4/5) – Good explosion. Difficult to contain off of the snap.

Lineman Mechanics (20)

Containment: 10

  • Double Team Consistency (3/5) – Doesn’t often pull double teams because of the variety of usage across the defensive line.
  • Double Team Win (2.5/5) – Doesn’t have the size to compete with double teams very well – will very rarely win them.

Hand Technique: 10

  • Hand Placement (4/5) – Great hand placement, can work a gap very quickly. Solid rip move. Can work off of blocks very quickly in 1v1 situations with his finesse.
  • Hand Strength (3.5/5) – Strong hands. Does a good job of shrugging and battling off contact.

Defender Ability (30)

Tackling/Pursuit: 15

  • Tackling Ability (6.5/8) – Excellent tackler. Wraps up well and has the strength to make solid arm tackles when he needs to. So disruptive in the gap.
  • Space Defending (1/3) – Has to attack in space and not wait to react.
  • Pursuit Angles (2.5/4) – Pursuit angles typically look good. Surprisingly rangy for a player of his size and skillset.

Instincts: 10

  • Recognition (3.5/5) – Generally, his recognition is excellent. Has the ability to react quickly to throws.
  • Natural Instincts (3/5) – Natural instincts flash, but aren’t nearly consistently.

Pass Rush Ability: 5

  • Pass Rush Consistency (3/5) – Doesn’t always go in without a plan, so consistency is sometimes an issue. Flashes the ability to come after the passer (13 hurries, 8 QBH last year) but isn’t there nearly enough.

Overall: (73.5) – 4th/5th Round
