Dorian Thompson-Robinson has captured the interest of several NFL teams throughout his five seasons as the Bruins’ starter. While he measured in taller than most people expected him to at the Shrine Bowl, DTR’s concerns are his size (191 pounds) and whether he can develop enough as a passer. I think he has a chance, as he has taken massive strides over the last few years, but still has some wrinkles to iron out.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson certainly has his upside present. Despite working through five seasons as the UCLA starter, DTR still shows a lot of raw mechanics that UCLA has allowed him to lean on over the last few years. His platform is too wide throwing, which causes him to be inconsistent with his accuracy. As long as DTR puts in the work to fix his platform, he can really become a more consistent passer and start being more comfortable in the pocket.
Has consistently missed a game or two each season with an injury. DTR’s smaller body certainly presents its concerns.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s scouting report
Quarterback Ability (65)
Arm Talent: 20
- Arm Strength (7.5/10) – Arm strength is adequate, DTR can push the ball down the field. Flashes good arm strength on certain throws, but it’s never great.
- Touch Ability (4/5) – Displays excellent touch ability. Needs to be more consistent about how he layers the ball in between coverages.
- Release (3.5/5) – Good, quick release. The release point tends to be low and he tends to drive the ball at shoulder height.
Accuracy/Placement: 25
- Accuracy (9/15) – Concerning inconsistency with accuracy. Struggled badly against Hawaii early in the game (2021). When he’s on, DTR looks like a very solid quarterback. Throws with rhythm and timing.
- Placement/Vision (6.5/10) – Placement is usually just a little bit off. Flashes the ability to throw tight windows. I don’t think that he anticipates as well as it looks sometimes, looks like he gets lucky sometimes.
Pocket Presence: 10
- Pocket Positioning (3/5) – Drop is alright, want to see more pop off the back of his drop.
- Pocket Maneuverability (2.5/5) – Does not feel the pocket well, tries to backpedal from the pocket instead of stepping up. Flashes some moves to keep the play going but overall tries to become a runner too quickly and is stopped.
Footwork: 10
- Consistency (2.5/5) – Has good footwork, crosses oddly behind instead of in front. When he plants, DTR tends to plant too wide. Does a good job keeping his feet active in the pocket.
- Quickness (3/5) – Foot quickness is good, not great.
Athleticism (20)
Mobility: 12
- Outside of the pocket (4/7) – Doesn’t really get outside of the pocket to throw, mostly a runner at that point. Certainly athletic enough moving, but doesn’t look like he’s comfortable throwing on the run.
- Downfield Ability (4.5/5) – DTR is an excellent athlete and does well to collect yardage downfield as a runner. Somewhat elusive. Doesn’t have the size to make you comfortable with his desire to run. Smaller Stature will make you worry about him.
Improvability: 8
- Natural Improvability (2.5/4) – Offers some improv skill, mostly as a runner. Doesn’t look for the improv plays very often, but he put a few on tape that were quite extraordinary.
- Play Extension (1.5/4) – Thompson-Robinson doesn’t show much ability to extend the play within structure.
Intelligence (15)
Football IQ/Field Vision: 10
- Football Intelligence (2.5/5) – Looses awareness at times that are inexplicable. Seems to have a limited understanding of defenses. Flashes great at times, at other times he’s not great.
- Ability to read pre-snap (3/5) – Can make accurate pre-snap reads and did it relatively often in 2022. Shows a good understanding of throwing against blitz packages particularly.
Overall: (67) – 5th/7th Round
