2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: LB Jack Campbell, Iowa

Jack Campbell is an intriguing prospect for the next level for a variety of reasons. First of all, he’s not a great athlete but he’s suitable enough for the linebacker position, even testing a little bit better than I had anticipated him testing. He is very instinctive and smart and he has a huge, hulking frame that would have been coveted fifteen years ago. However, it’s a passing league, so the question is whether Campbell can hold up in pass coverage.

Jack Campbell

ILB – Iowa Hawkeyes

HT: 6046
WT: 249
WING: 7828
ARM: 3178
HAND: 1028
DOB: 8/22/2000
Year: Super Redshirt Sophomore
High School: Cedar Falls (Cedar Falls, IA)
HS Rating: 3-star (0.8706)

Projected Draft Grade: Future Starter

Projection: 2nd/3rd Round

Where is Campbell’s upside? I don’t see a lot of it. He’s maxed out at this point in terms of his strength, frame, and athletic ability. He’s already very instinctual and that’s really what makes him as effective as he is in coverage. He’s a good tackler who could work through traffic and congested areas of the field better.

Has done a solid job staying healthy throughout his career. Hasn’t missed a start over the last two years. Didn’t bench at his pro day due to a shoulder injury.

Jack Campbell’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (30)

Speed/Athleticism: 20

  • Speed (5/8) – Decent athlete, nothing to write home about. Certainly very quick but top end speed isn’t there.
  • Lateral Quickness (4.5/7) – Lateral quickness isn’t great. It’s suitable enough to hold up, but certainly nothing that stands out.
  • Body Control (3.5/5) – Good body control for the most part. Struggles to change direction. Hips are somewhat stiff but not too bad.

Strength/Power: 10

  • Upper Body Strength (2.5/3) – Very strong upper body. Shows that as a tackler and when he engages with blockers.
  • Lower Body Strength (2.5/3) – Explosive. Well built in his lower half.
  • Brute Power (3.5/4) – Compared to other linebackers, Campbell is definitely a brute. He’s hulking in strength and can destroy ball carriers. He has the size to move people.

Defending Ability (40)

Tackling/Pursuit: 15

  • Tackling Ability (7/9) – Not a consistent tackler. Flashes great hit power, but doesn’t wrap up consistently. When he does make the tackle, he is powerful.
  • Pursuit Angles (4.5/6) – Struggles to pursue through traffic. Tends to go low and can miss tackles against quicker ball carriers. Struggles to pursue to the boundary.

Blitz Ability: 5

  • Blitz Timing (3.5/5) – Not a consistent blitzer, but didn’t see a lot of the opportunities that he could thrive from in the Iowa scheme.

Coverage Ability: 20

  • Space Defending (8/10) – Solid space defender. Moves in it well, positions well, comes downhill and attacks the ball carrier with solid closing speed.
  • Man Coverage (3/5) – Shows a little bit of man coverage ability, mostly with his length. Won’t be able to follow players effectively vertically.
  • Zone Coverage (4/5) – Capable in zone coverage. Smart and adept at moving within his zone.

Intel/Instincts (25)

Football IQ: 10

  • Play Recognition (4/5) – Seems to recognize plays well. Reads concepts and points out coverage adjustments during the play. It’s clear that he does his film studies. Fits run gaps extremely well.
  • Understanding of Concepts (4/5) – Understands offensive concepts very well.

Instincts: 15

  • Natural Instincts (8/10) – Shows good instincts. Very solid at moving to the proper place to make the play.
  • Consistency (4/5) – Fairly consistent with his instincts.

Overall: (81) – 1st/2nd Round
